Tony Award-winner here Friday for first collegiate performance By BOB WEBB Of the Emerald “Equus," a play by Peter Shaf fer which won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Play, will receive its first collegiate performance when the University’s Carnival Theatre opens its summer sea son Friday night. The play is a journey into the mind of a deranged 17-year-old boy who senselessly and sys tematically blinds six horses with a steel spike. The play's drama unfolds when a psychiatrist exp lores the young boy's tortured ^ British playwright Peter Shaffer was bom in Liverpool in 1926. His first play, "Five Finger Exercise,' opened in both London and New York to strong critical acclaim. Shaffer has written and produced five other plays: “The Private Ear’’ and The Public Eye’’ in 1962, “The Royal Hunt of the Sun ” in 1964, "Black Comedy in 1965 and "Shrivings,” which first Buy 1 at the regular price and get the second for only 1 cent BANANA SPLIT SALE Dairy Queen only THURSDAY June 23 ► only T3tHT Hilyard appeared on the London stage as the “Battle of Shrivings" in 1970. “Equus” is considered to be Shaffer's most conspicuous suc cess to date. Carnival's production of “Equus” will be directed by Faber DeChaine. DeChaine is a profes sor of theater Arts at the Univer sity. He received his B.S. here in 1952, his M.S. at Michigan State in 1953 and his Ph.D. at the Uni versity of Minnesota in 1963. His most recent production was last winter’s "MacBeth." Other Uni versity Theatre (UT) directing as signments include “Our Town” (1974), “Tiny Alice" (1975) and Carnival Theatre's “Dylan' (1976). Others involved with the play include University speech faculty members Mimi Mace, costume designer; Jerry Williams, scenic designer; J. Thibeau, technical di rector; and James Conant of Eugene who will portray the dis turbed boy, Alan Strang. The psychiatrist will be played by Tom Laswell. “Equus" is the first of seven productions Carnival Theatre will be mounting this summer. The other major shows and their run ning dates are: “And Miss Rear don Drinks a Little,” by Paul Zin del and directed by Tom Gill (July 8); "Funny Girl,” by Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Isobel Lennart, di rected by Tom Laswell (July 21); and N. In addition to the major produc tions three children's shows will be presented. “Skupper Duppers" by Flora Atkin will be directed by Tom Gressler and opens July 2. Mary Pack will be directing “Sing Ho for a Prince” by Joe Grenzebach with music by Haakon Bergh. It will be per formed July 16 through the 21. An additional treat will be a presentation of “Hansel and Gre tel” in the form of a marionette opera directed by Jerry Williams." Hansel and Gretel" will open July 30 for a five-day run. People in terested in working on this show in creating and operating the puppets may sign up for William s Puppetry Class (407) during the summer school term. All Carnival Theatre produc tions are produced under the tent to the west of the Robinson Theatre, Villard Hall. The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. on productions nights Children's shows are $1. “Equus" runs Friday and Saturday night and next Wed nesday through Saturday. ‘Bus Stop’ comedy opens at Atrium .The Oregon Repertory Theatre (formerly Eugene Theatre Company) will open its production of “Bus Stop,” a comedy from the fifties by William Inge, tonight at 8:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Atrium in Eugene. Bus Stop is a warm-hearted comedy about what happens when several bizarre individuals get stranded overnight in a Kansas country diner. The company selected this script because each of the eight characters has an individual story to tell, em phasizing the kind of ensemble work that the Oregon Repertory Theatre is committed to produc ing. The cast of “ Bus Stop” features Carol Young as Cherrie and Jim Robinson as Bo, playing the young lovers in an adult play after having played opposite each other in the company s children's play, “Androcles and the Lion.” Will Emery, most recently seen as the Lion in the same production, will play Bo's cowboy sidekick, Virgil. Popular com pany actresses Jane VanBoskirk and Nyla McCar thy play the two waitresses at the bus stop, one salty and tough, the other demure and innocent. Their quiet and slow night is interrupted by a degen erate, alcoholic Dr. Lyman, played by John Freeman, and the earthy bus dnver, played by Philip Miller. 'Bus Stop" will play at 8:30 on the following evenings in the theater's new home on the second floor of the Atrium Mall: June 23-26, June 30, July 1-3 and July 7-8.
