Newspaper Page TextTenants head south to meet State Board By RICHARD SEVEN Of the Emerald The Amazon Community Tenants (ACT) continue to stand firm in their strike over the University Housing Department's proposed $10 rent increase and are preparing their case for the May 27 State Board of Higher Education meeting. Approximately 110 rent checks for May and 35 checks for June are in escrow in an ACT account. ACT representatives say community support of the strike is still strong and they are taking a wait-and-see attitude toward any housing department ac tion. According to policy, eviction notices are to be sent out before the end of the month. However, Ray Hawk, vice president for administration and finance, has asked the chancellor of the State Board to delay the notices until the housing issue is settled. According to ACT member John Lawr ence, the strike already has caused some positive effects. "We've had a lot more done around here this week than in the past year," says Lawr ence. ‘‘People say strikes complicate things, but they also make views known and get things done. I think the University is taking note of our togetherness.’’ However, not all Amazon residents are participating in the strike. Some are graduating or moving out. Some are waging other battles. Some, like Dan and Francie Cogan, just like the service. “We have no complaints; 80 bucks is a good deal,” says Dan Cogan. “We’ve never had any problems with the service either. We’ve lived in places a lot worse for a lot more,” Francie Cogan adds. “It’s hard to find a place for a comparable price that will allow children.” Others, like Jeff Lance, question the strikers’ chances for success. “They don’t have any legal power behind them like in an industrial strike,” Lance says. “They can hold out but I don’t think it will do much good. I support them and a strike is an effective way to make a plat form and get their needs and wants heard, but I can't run the nsk.” ACT spokespersons say morale is still high among the strikers, who constitute well over half the 240-unit complex's residents. They are planning to take a bus load of people to Klamath Falls Friday for the State Board meeting, where ACT representatives will expand on their presentation at the pub lic hearing May 17. Currently, both ACT and University offi cials are waiting for a private accounting agency’s audit of the fiscal and manage ment policies of the married student hous ing programs.
