-sports Twelve Oregon women meet nation’s best today at UCLA Competition begins today for the twelve Oregon women who qualified for the three-day national collegiate track championships at UCLA. The Ducks are undefeated this year in the 400, mile and two-mile relays, setting meet and school records in all three events last weekend in the Northwest re gional meet. According to coach Tom Heinonen, the relays are Oregon’s best bets for points. Kathy Guiney, Dawna Rose Mary Officer and Carol Amaral comprise the 400 relay team. Amaral, who won the NCWSA 100 meter dash and was second in the 200 meters, will run the open 100 meters in Los Angeles. She ran her lifetime best in last year’s national 100 meter race but even with the effort did not make the final. She will join the mile relay quartet at nationals to free team mate Ellen Schmidt for the two mile relay squad. Oregon’s two-mile relay team of Schmidt, Debbie Roth, Robin Baker and Sandy Trowbridge has the best chance to score. The Ducks have the third fastest time in the country in that event at 9:07 behind Kansas State (8:48.4) and Prairie View A & M (8:55.1). And Oregon has the potential to chop ten seconds off that time, Heino nen said, because the 9:07 NCWSA win came with Schmidt coasting to a 2:18.0 anchor leg. Schmidt came back the next day to win the 800 in 2:11.5, a few tenths of a second off her lifetime best. Schmidt will run the open 800 against Olympians Wendy Knud son of Colorado State and Kathy Weston of UCLA at the national meet, as will teammate Trow bridge, who finished sixth in the regional meet in a lifetime best 2:15.7. Oregon s Baker is also en tered with a best of 2:14. Both Carol (Amaral) and Ellen (Schmidt) will have to run lifetime bests to get into the finals of their events,' said Heinonen. "The competition is going to be incredi ble." Sprint coach Peter Thompson predicted Mary Officer should make the finals in the 100 meter hurdles, an event she placed fifth in last year in the national meet. "Under pressure Mary beats peo ple who are faster than she is...relaxation is important and Mary is used to coping with the pressure," he said. Thompson also said the 400 meter relay has the potential to go faster "The hand-offs in regionals last week were good for the first time but each individual still has a little more to give on her leg," he said. In addition to the two-mile relay, Roth will compete in the 1,500, entering with a season's best of 4:34.3 and a personal best of 4:25.1. Oregon discus throwers Mary Stevenson and Kathy Picknell have also qualified for the national meet while Maggie Bonn will compete in the shot put event. Kathy Young led the Oregon contigent at the Emerald Valley Golf Course near Creswell with a final round 75 for a 231 total and third place Young, who was tied for the third spot after Tuesday s second round, finished behind Washington s Mary Mulflur and Patty Marquis. Mulflur, who lead throughout the Invitational, won the event with a three-over-par 225 total, while Marquis finished one shot back at 226. Oregon s Gmny Burgey edged the Invitational s defending champ, Rise Alexander of Oregon State, in sudden death for fourth. Burkey and Alexander ended regulation play tied at 234. Karen Henry of the University carded a 242 in the tourney to capture ninth place, whiie Liz Cooper finished at 244. Marilyn O'Brien closed the women's final event of the year with a 255 total, and the Ducks Cheryl Wrede ended at 258. The tourney marked the end of the season for most of the women linkers. Oregon's Young and Burkey, however, will take part in next month s AIAW Golf Championships, to be played in Kahuku, Hawaii. Fun runs planned for Sunday The Oregon Track Club will sponsor a Fun Run this Sunday at Alton Baker Park, starting at 1:30 p.m. Two and four mile runs will start and finish in the park, following a course along Day Island Road and the bike path. No entry fee is charged and no prizes will be awarded. Times will be read aloud, however, as each runner finishes. The monthly runs are designed to give runners and joggers a chance to test themselves informally on an accurate course. Winbigler to compete in Modesto Lynne Winbigler, a former member of the Oregon women's track squad and a current member of the Oregon Track Club, will compete in both the discus and shot put in the Modesto Relays this weekend. Winbigler, a 1976 Olympian and AAU discus champion, moved to No. 2 on the all-time U.S. discus list with a throw of 181-9 in the Oregon Twilight Meet earlier this month.
