Public library hangs
‘primitive realism’,
printmaking students
The Eugene Public Library will
present paintings by Ruth Volk
mann starting April 5 until April 30.
Ruth Volkmann describes her
style as "primitive realism”. “I am
concerned with creating a “Sec
ondary World”, based on our own
reality. My aim is to enlarge our
appreciation of and reintroduce us
to the wonder and beauty of the
natural world. I shift the normal
viewpoint by using flat perspec
tive, by avoiding spatial and at
mospheric depth, and by eliminat
ing detail. This results in clean,
designed paintings, strangely ar
resting and yet familiar. What you
might say of these paintings is It
looks so real’, but what you mean
is ‘It looks so true’.”
Volkmann is a graduate from
Reed College-Portland Museum
Art School in 1954 and did addi
tional studies at Boston University
and Harvard University. She has
taught extensively and shown in
many art galleries including the
Focus Gallery at the University Art
Museum.

Zach, “As with many major artists,
his output and interests are tre

constantly and vitally growing. His
approach is visceral, intellectual,
spiritual. His words say it best: ‘My
work is of essence, purity, and
light.’ ”
A preview of the show will by
