Repotting vital to plants r \ Sundown is Eugene’s own — a local manufac turer of high quality outdoor clothing and equipment Sleeping Bags Clothing Packs Material By MICHELE PEEPLES For the Emerald The plant world holds so many plant species that you are certain to find one, or many that are especially pleasing When choosing an indoor plant, there are basics which shouldn t be overlooked Whether your choice is an exotic or common one. potting soil, watering and correct light are vital to any plant's well-being When you acquire a new plant, check its root system by gently lapping the pot against a hard edge, and liolding the base of the plant to ease it out of its pot If the plant comes free from the soil medium very easily, the root system hasn't begun its mature development. If the roots are entwined around the soil and the soil is "tight, your plant needs a new pot at least two inches larger Potting soil can be obtained through stores which carry special mediums particular to plant types — or it should basically consist of one part garden loam, sterilized first ;r> a 250 degree oven for half an hour, one part peat moss and one part vermiculite and or perlite The latter helps provide soil drainage Ground egg shells are sometimes used for this, and are said to provide calcium nutrients Place broken pottery pieces on the bottom of the pot before adding the soil Pebbles or egg shells will also do Place a half hand full of soil over the pottery pieces and your plant is ready for its new pot and additional soil. Add enough soil to reach the same level on the plant s base as it was previously planted Water the pot until the water comes out of the drainage hole. Some prefer to plant in pots without drainage, but extreme caution must be used so as not to cause water-logging ' of the roots When watering, it is best to allow the soil to become rather on the dry side before moisten ing again This prevents overwatering and gives the plant s roots a chance to breathe But don t wait too long or dry root-rot may be a problem Tags identifying plants in stores seem to always suggest keep moist, or never dry-out", when they should mean, keep moist but let the soil dry a little first. Now place the plant in light Every plant needs at least a little. Some do very well in shade, but just move it to a bit more light and note the growth difference. All plants have their own light needs , cactus, the sun; ferns, dimmer light, etc Keep in mind that each individual species will probably thrive more with some kind of light, and that each has its own preference for amount.
