It’s UCLA all the way, 46-0

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Coliseum
looked more like the Roman Coliseum Saturday as
third-ranked UCLA slaughtered Oregon 46-0 to give
the Ducks their fifth straight loss.
The only difference was, the Christians gave the
lions a bigger struggle in Rome.
On a hot and smoggy day, the Bruins played
everybody but their flag girls to roll up 511 yards —
441 of that on the ground. Oregon s offense, mean
while, was its usual conservative and lethargic self as
it compiled 93 yards passing and minus two yards
rushing
The only facts that stood out from the contest was
a school-record 55-yard field goal by UCLA kicker
Frank Corral in the second quarter, and the Bruins'
first recorded shutout since it beat Oregon 21-0 23
games ago in 1974
"The most gratifying feature was it was the first
shutout for UCLA in a long time," said UCLA first
year coach Terry Donahue. "You have to give our
defense credit because it's easy to get way ahead
and let down emotionally We could ve lost our inten
sity, but we continued to play hard."
Other than that, the game went pretty much as
everybody expected
Oregon started the game with its typical three
quick plays and a short punt to the UCLA 45 After a
return of seven yards, the Bruins methodically and
systematically drove down the field to score Quar
terback Jeff Dankworth ran 10 yards to the 30, nine
yards to the 29, then nine yards again two plays later
to the 21.
Theotis Brown ran twice to the 13 before Dank
worth ran right, then cut left through the Duck de
fense and ran untouched for UCLA's first of five
touchdowns
We felt going into the game that Jeff could go
outside by looking at last year s film," said Donahue
whose team now stands at 8-0-I "Their tackles were
pinching down to shut off the dive series, and Jeff
was able to run the way we hoped
The Ducks were polite enough to give UCLA
another opportunity to show off its powerful Veer
oflense on its next series On the first play, quarter
back Jack Henderson fumbled the snap and UCLA s
Manu Tuiasosopo recovered on the Oregon 20
Dankworth scrambled around left end for nine
yards to the 11, and Wendell Tyler plunged two yards
for a first down on the nine Dankwroth rolled around
the right side for eight yards before Tyler ran in un
touched from the one for a 14-0 lead with 8:20 left in
the first quarter
For all intents and purposes, the game was over.
“Don Read is an excellent coach and he has a
gutty football team,” said Donahue. “But they were
just outmanned."
It was even more evident when Donahue put in
the second string in the middle of the second quarter
with UCLA ahead 24-0. The Bruins didn't let up.
Quarterback Steve Bukich directed UCLA 66 yards
in 10 plays for another field goal as he used James
Brown and Eddie Owens to carry the ball to the Duck
20. Frank Corrall then kicked a 37-yard field goal, his
third of the day, to give UCLA a 27-0 lead.
‘They're all talented," said a crushed Read in a
small locker room cubicle. “They run with a great
forward tilt. They run through people, and they break
off people. I can’t slight the effort of our kids. But we
made too many mistakes.”
Offensively, Oregon’s longest drive was just 38
yards, as UCLA forced the Ducks to punt 11 times.
Oregon reached Bruin territory once when Hender
son hit Greg Bauer for 12 yards to the UCLA 45, and
George Bennett ran three yards to the 42. But Hen
derson was sacked on the next play back at the Bruin

So much for Oregon’s biggest scoring threat.
That's how the half ended, and the 33,000 fans
spent the rest of the game getting sun tans and
watching UCLA’s fabulous card section.
It was a nice rest for the Bruins, as they now face
1 -8 Oregon State next Saturday before meeting USC
for the Pacific-8 championship. The Bruins are hop
ing Oregon State will be as unimpressive as Oregon
was
“They were a lower-class team," said Bruin of
fensive tackle Rob Kezirian in a calm and business
like locker room. "Their personnel weren't as strong
as ours. Our second team moved the ball as well as
our first team. They have some good people, but they
aren't as strong as our own.”
Dankworth was a little less kind
"We didn't predict winning by 46 points, but they
didn't have the quickness we expected," he said.
"They had no secondary support. When you play an
option team you need the secondary support which
they didn't have Their linebackers were quick, but
they overran a lot of the plays."
UCLA offensive tackle Gus Coppens probably
summed it up best when he said, "Physically, they’re
not like the kind of players they recruit here at UCLA.”
So what s left for the 3-6 Ducks with no chance
left for a winning record? With 4-5 Stanford coming to
town next Saturday and a visit to Oregon State in two
weeks, Oregon still has a chance for its best record
since 1970 when it went 6-4-1.
But unless Oregon finds an offense and play
consistently on defense, the Ducks will have to wait
until 1977 with another disasterous season on their
minds.
Duck ruggers lose to Jesters
Oregon's A-side rugby club
found the Portland Jesters a little
too hot to handle in the second
half Saturday, as the Ducks lost a
15-3 decision on the home field
Oregon played the Jesters even
in the first half with each team
scoring a three-point penalty kick,
but the second half turned out to
be a different story Two penalty
kicks and a try and its conversion
kick by the Portland club ail went
unanswered by the Ducks, whose
record dropped to 1-3.
The game remained scoreless
until midway through the first half,
when the Jesters were awarded
their first penalty kick of the match.
The Portland kicker sailed the ball
over the goalpost for a 3-0 lead
Barely two minutes later,
Oregon scored its lone points on a
penalty kick by Bruce Mason,
evening the score at 3-3.
A four-point try and two-point
conversion kick near the end of
the match put the victory away for
the Jesters.
The Ducks missed two scoring
opportunities dunng the second
half, one on a missed penalty kick,
and another when an open-field
run and almost sure try or drop
kick score was called back when a
Duck player passed the ball for
ward.
The next Oregon match
scheduled for the A-side team is
next Saturday against the Old
Bulls Rugby Club in a game in
Corvallis.
