    ‘What? — No index?’
A questionnaire will be placed at various points in the
University general library this week to find out how stu
dents are adjusting to microfilm cataloging, according to
Jim Dwyer, a library instructor and cataloger.
The questionnaire should help the library determine
if students are having problems, what the problems are
and what they can do to alleviate those problems, says
Dwyer.
Students were probably surprised to walk into the
library this year and see the microfilm readers set up If
students were in the reserve reading section, they had no
choice but to use the readers.
Elaine Kemp, head catalog librarian, said the library
has been having its cards made into microfilm since July,
1975.
The microfilm was then made into microfiche, which
is a computer output of microfilm. This means all the
computer-processed material can now be updated more
efficiently and more quickly, according to Kemp.
“It is a way of utilizing technology to eliminate routine
jobs. These people can now spend their time assisting the
public," Kemp said.
The microfiche readers are located in the social sci
ence, humanities and education psychology divisions
and the reserve reading section of the main library, and
also at the architecture and allied arts library, the science
library and the law library.
Each station has an author, title and subject catalog.
The basic catalog is a photocopy of what was available in
the spring of 1975, and there is also a supplement which
contains corrections for the main catalog and additions to
it. The supplement is revised every two weeks.
A four-letter index marks the corner of each card.
Students are having problems as a result of the index
system, Kemp acknowledges. Therefore, the library is
presently revising its system for more convenient use.
