Students plan Bike-a-thon
The Oregon Alliance of Blind
Students (OABS) is planning a 23
mile Tandem Bike-a-thon in which
blind students from around the
state will ride on the back of tan
dems ridden by volunteers from
the community. The Bike-a-thon is
Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m., starting at
Alton Baker Park.
The Tandem Bike-a-thon's
purpose is to raise scholarship
funds for a blind student. The
OABS would like to invite in
terested people to call Switch
board at 686-8453 and leave their
name and phone number for JD.
Some important things the
OABS needs: tandem bikes, rid
ers, volunteers to man check
points, sponsors.
All bikers can pick up their
sponsor sheets at local bike
shops.
Single bikers are welcome.

SALEM—Collecting additional
taxes from big multistate and mul
tinational corporations will be
easier because of a recent U.S.
District Court decision in New
York, according to John Lobdell,
director of the Oregon Depart
ment of Revenue.
The decision allows states to
cooperate through the Multistate
Tax Commission (MTC) to deter
mine taxes due by interstate
businesses. Twenty-one states,
including Oregon, are members of
MTC.
Several corporations filed suit
against MTC contending that it
was not a legal entity. They said
that such an agency is unconstitu
tional unless Congress enacts
specific legislation to create the
agency. The court disagreed.
The dispute was triggered by
the commission's joint audit pro
gram. Under this program, an
audit team of MTC audits state tax
returns of a corporation for several
states at the same time. The
states maintain that this greatly
increases their enforcement
capabilities.
Oregon has collected nearly
half a million dollars from several
corporations as a result of MTC
audits.
Lobdell says the court decision
should enable MTC to perform
audits on more corporations and
will increase state corporation tax
revenues with very little additional
cost to the state.
Lobdell was recently elected
vice-chairman of MTC.
