Open as the wilderness...
i he outdoor Program is as
open as the wilderness it pursues
— no membership, no dues, no
rules, no restrictions for participat
ing. It merely coordinates a host of
outdoor activities such as hiking,
climbing, rafting, canoeing, kayak
ing, cross country skiing, and
bicycling. Many of the trips are in
structional, although some are
downright tests for those claiming
to be experts.
Outdotx P'ogiam photo
aii activities originate irom vol
unteer interest, and the program
charges no costs besides trans
portation, food and equipment ex
penses. The group process,
rather than authoritarian leader
ship governs all activities. Conse
quently, self responsibility and
common sense are key require
ments for participation.
To find out what activities are
going on throughout the summer,
check the program's activities
board in Room 23, EMU (in the
basement) or call 686-4365. Ac
tivities are also listed in the
program's bi-yearly publication
Cooperative Wilderness Ad
ventures/Free Country Times.
Some of the major events plan
ned for this summer are kayaking
and rafting in the North Cascades
National Park, July 11-16; bicycl
ing on Smith River Road, July 30
to Aug. 2; and river rafting and
clean-up on the Salmon River,
Aug. 23 to Sept. 3.
A new interdisciplinary program
on wilderness between the Out
door Program and the University’s
honors college is starting up this
summer. It is designed for the
formal study of complex,
wilderness-related, ecological,
socio-economical, recreational,
political and historical issues.
Students may participate in some
of the program s activities while
developing special projects for
credit in selected academic de
partments.
An informal meeting for stu
dents interested in the wilderness
curriculum will be held Tuesday in
the EMU at 7:30 p.m., room to be
announced. by Martha Blias
