Oregon coast boasts of bigger curves
They could never have filmed
Beach Blanket Bingo in Newport,
but that’s okay 'cause the jetties
and driftwood that dot the Oregon
coastline are a lot more magnific
ant than Annette Funicello’s
cleavage anyway. For Eugene re
sidents, the 26 miles between
Florence and Yachats offer an
especially pleasant day’s agenda.
Just north of Florence are a
number of beaches begging to be
strolled upon, but after about 10
miles the sand is replaced by rock.
A little over 10 miles north of Flor
ence is the Sea Lion caves. If it s a
stormy day, the lions will be hang
ing out inside, and it’s worth the $2
elevator ride to go down to sea
level and watch them. On nice
days however, the large mam
mals, relatives of the seal, spend
their time soaking up the sun on
the large rocks near the entrance
Ashland: much ado about piays
Tickets for this summer’s Oregon Shakespearean Festival in Ash
land are going fast. The festival offers six plays from June 12 to Sept 19
in two different theatres.
Seatings are especially low for preformances during June and July
while good seating is still available for late August and September. An
availability list is on display at the EMU Main desk.
Three Shakespeare plays, 'Much Ado About Nothing, King
Lear” and “Henry VI, Part 2”, are presented in the Elizabethan
Stagehouse outdoors as evening performances. The matinee oftenngs
are performed indoors in the Angus Bowmer Theatre These plays are
‘Comedy of Errors" by William Shakespeare, "The Devil s Disciple by
George Bernard Shaw and “The Little Foxes” by Lillian Heilman.
There are three prices for both indoor and outdoor plays, $7, $5,
and $3.50. Children under 12 are admitted for half price but no children
under 3 are allowed. Backstage tours are conducted daily, except on
Sundays, at 10 a.m. with admissions being $2. Tickets for the plays and

to the caves. The second turn-out
north of the Sea Lion Cave build
ings is a good vantage point to
watch the animals lie on the rocks
and play in the surf.
Twelve to fifteen miles further
up the road are Devil’s Churn and
Cape Perpetua. The churn is a
place where the ocean has worn
away at a natural fault and created
a narrow passage that causes the
breakers to erupt into foam and
die with a thundering crash
against the back of an unseen
cave.
Directly above the churn tow
ers Cape Perpetua. Used by the
Coastal Indians as a vantage
point to guard against attack by
sea. the top of the cape is now a
state park, and on a dear day pro
vides a vantage point hard to beat.
In addition, the lush vegetation
along the north side of the peak
creates an almost prehistoric rain
forest atmosphere perfect for
strolling and thinking.
With an early start, the trip from
Eugene to Cape Perpetua and
back provides a good full day
break away from the dty. And be
sides, dnfwood makes such great
mobiles.
