header at 1 p.m. Brian Peterson
(3-3, 2.38) and Brian Shandera
(2-0, 9.62) will start for Oregon
while Gail Meier (7-4, 3.33) and
Scott Anderson (2-1,1.77) are the
probable Beaver starters.
The Beavers will be less than
full strength as leading hitter Pete
Rowe will sit out with an injury.
The All-Northern Division catcher
was hitting .338 before he
sprained an ankle in last
Saturday’s game with Washing
ton.
First baseman Rob Drahn leads
the Beavers with a .304 average,
37 runs-batted-in and 8 doubles.
Leadoff hitter Jeff Doyle is hitting
.292, has 22 stolen bases and 42
walks.
Ray Smith will be one of six
Oregon seniors playing their last
games as Ducks. Smith leads the
team in nine categories, including
average (.319), doubles (9), home
runs (5) and RBIs (26).
Outfielder Mike Connolly also
has a .311 average and desig
nated hitter Tim Stack is hitting
.308.

UO women slate weekend action
Fresh off her win in the Daisy Duck Invitational
Gold Tournament this week, Oregon State's Rise
Alexander will face Oregon's Kathy Young in the
Oregon-Oregon State match today at 1 p.m. at
Shadow Hills Country Club.
Alexander took the Daisy Duck tournament with
155 strokes, seven ahead of Young, who placed
third. In team competition Oregon finished ahead of
OSU, giving the Ducks three wins in as many meet
ings with the Beavers this season. Alexander holds a
2-1 edge over Young.
Mary Wilson, second for Oregon in Daisy Duck first
flight competition with 182, will be paired with Young
while Alexander and Tracie Domogalla will be OSU’s
number one team.
Softball
Oregon’s softball team. 12-6 this season, will be in
Portland this weekend for the NCWSA Invitational
Softball Tournament.
Pitcher Shawna Baxter appears to be recovered
from an arm injury which prevented her from pitching
in the World Series and should be throwing for the
Ducks in Portland.
Track
Karen Marshall will be out to break her school
record in the shot put and pentathletes Mary Officer
and Dana Collins will meet eacti other in the 200 in
the special ‘mini" track meet Saturday at Hayward
Field, held in conjunction with the U S. Olympic Tnals
Marathon.
Officer and Collins would both like to run near 25.0
for the 200 as they get ready for the AAU Pentathlon
next weekend in Santa Barbara Collins, a high
school senior from Salem, has a good chance to
make the Olympic team.
Marshall has thrown 46-4 in the shot this year and
will compete in both the shot and discus at the na
tional AAU meet in June, in hopes of gaining a berth
in the Olympic Trials.
A special 10,000 meter race should be the fea
tured women's event as Peg Neppel (world record
holder in the 3-mile), Jacki Hansen (world record
holder in the marathon), Carol Cook (American re
cord holder in the 10,000) and Nadia Garcia (Ameri
can record holder in the hour run) take a crack at
Cook's national record of 34:39.0.
Other events
Oregon's Michelle Menkens hopes to achieve an
Olympic qualifying time this weekend in the Mult
nomah Athletic Club Invitational in Portland.
Menkens will compete for Willamalane Swim Club
in the meet, swimming in the 100 and 200 freestyle,
the 100 and 200 butterfly, the 100 breastroke and the
400 medley relay.
