of an old English comedy

She Stoops to Conquer, an En
glish Restoration comedy, is
now playing in the Pocket
Playhouse in Villard Hall.
Written by Oliver Goldsmith,
the play tells the story of Kate
Hardcastle (Kitty Swink) who
“stoops to conquer” her in
tended, young Charles Marlow
(Rick Harris).
The play was first produced in
London in 1773 and has enjoyed
numerous revivals since that
time. Although generally pro
duced as a period piece, the Uni
versity Theatre production of
She Stoops to Conquer will be
modern, suggesting the staging
conventions of the 18th Century

English stage, rather than at
tempting to duplicate them.
The play opened last night and
will play through Saturday.
Tickets, priced at $2 for the
general public and $1 for U of 0
students with current term fee
receipts, are still available. The
box office is open noon to 5 p.m.
daily except Sunday and is open
