Committee seeks input
Lane County commissioners
are looking for an individual to
serve on the Metropolitan Area
Plan Advisory Committee
(MAPAC).
Composed of representatives
of Eugene, Springfield and Lane
County, the committee seeks to
achieve a balanced representa
tion. The commissioners would
like to find someone living outside
the city limits of Eugene and
Springfield but within the area en
compassed by the 1990 General
Plan.
MAPAC members advise the
county and cities in annually re
viewing the 1990 General Plan
addressing such areas as open
space, recreation, sewers, water
and air quality and other regional
plans affecting natural resources
such as transportation, housing
and economic development.

Workshop to help elderly grow
An experimental program based on the belief that
older people can grow and change as much as
younger people will be the topic of the University
Gerontology Association s spring workshop.
The all day public workshop May 22 win explore
the creation, techniques and effectiveness of the
Senior Actualization and Growth Experience (SAGE)
project.
SAGE is a two-year-old project aimed at helping
people age 65 and older experience aging as some
thing other than deterioration.
Relaxation training, Hatha (Yoga, body-mind
awareness exercises), massage, meditation and art
experiences are some techniques used by SAGE in
nursing homes, community centers, hospitals, uni
versities, and private homes in many cities.
Demonstrations of these techniques and discus
sions of how SAGE operates will be lead by Ken
Dytchtwald, co-director of SAGE in Berkeley,
California.
Dytchtwald will conduct the workshop using van
ous audio-visual aids including a documentary film
entitled “The SAGE Project—A Coming of Age.
Preregistration before May 14 is required. Persons
may register by calling the Gerontology Association
at 686-5131 or Patti Phelps at 342-8388.
The workshop is free for senior citizens and stu
dents, $5 for others. It will be held at Gerfinger
Lounge from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Indian Movement (AIM) defen
dants and leaders on Monday.
Scheduled activities include a
benefit breakfast at-the Homefried

low.
In addition, a women's potluck
and discussion is planned with
Ellen Movescamp, AIM activist at
St. Mary s Episcopal Church, 13th
and Pearl streets. Native Ameri
can struggles is the concern of a
7:30 p.m. meeting at the church
with Banks, Movescamp, one of
the AIM lawyers and a native
Brazilian speaking on South
American Indians.

Errors sneak
into Emerald
Unfortunately, there were two
errors in Thursday’s Emerald. The
story dealing with the ASUO elec
tion returns incorrectly reported
the percentage increase over last
year. The total number of voters
this year was 16 per cent of those
eligible, which is over a 100 per
cent increase from last year.
The second error appeared in
the Surface and Symbol
calendar, where the admission
price to Sunday's spring concert
presented by the Women’s Choral
Society was incorrect. Admission
is $2 for general public, $1 for
senior citizens and free for chil
dren under 12.

Farmworkers
set Gallo picket
As part of National Farm work
ers Week, the Eugene Friends of
the Farmworkers are sponsoring
a mass picket today at the Eugene
Gallo distributors, M.H. Burris Co.,
W. 6th and Garfield St, from 4 to
6 p.m.
"We are picketing the Gallo dis
tributors in an effort to contest
Gallo's recent media campaign in
this area. Gallo has been advertis
ing Carlo Rossi wines in the
Emerald and on KZEL and KBDF
radio. Carlo Rossi is just another
name for Gallo scab wine," says
Kurt Wilcox, a member of the pro
farmworker organization.

She says she was subjected to
constant harassment, hearings,
threats and insults as a result of
her stand against CIA advertising.
Her house was broken into, files
on the American Indian Move
ment and former PSU professor
Frank Giese stolen and the rest
strewn about her house. Valu
ables in the house were left un
touched.
She said the same night of the
break-in, a source which had pro
vided information on former board
member Pat Bennett was
threatened with death. (Bennett
later resigned, charging Hawkins
with running a campaign against
him, returned to the board and res
igned again.)
Hawkins said it got to the point
that she sat at home three or four
nights • waiting" for someone to
come after her. She was forced to
move.
She has charged that the CIA
was behind the pressure gener
ated against her. In a letter dated
Oct. 17. Special Representative
Thomas Culhane of the CIA
Portland office asked PSU
President Joseph Bkjmel for "an
early reply to our letter of Oct. 6,
1975 to the Vanguard." Hawkins
calls that "pressure ”
