Newspaper Page TextTime for relays, rays and double plays By BOB WELCH Of the Emerald Spring at Oregon is a relaxing time—a breath of fresh air after stuffy gyms, a wringing out after soggy days, a handful of low-key sports after the intense games of winter. It's a time when basketball players grow beards and almost become human again. Hayward Field suddenly becomes the focal point on campus and Peter Jacobsen s drives get a little roll instead of plugging in the soggy fairway. Studies, which now might rank seventh on most student s list, drop clean out of the Top Twenty. Books don't stand a chance when competing with line drives, vol leys. fast miles, solid three-woods and some of the scenery which accompanies it all. What s neat about spring is that people don t just watch sports, they participate. Outside. All us fair-weather joggers muster the Student Special!! And. now that she can play without gloves and a windbreaker. the tennis buff makes her debut on the court. If you re a spring sports fan. you II welcome the thought of sim ply walking into a track meet mi nutes befoe it starts, rather than camping for eight hours and get ting pushed through the gates like part of a buffalo herd. Oregon s distance runners, re member, have been getting up every morning to put in their five miles. Baseball players have been circling the lobby of Mac Court so long they could tell you every trophy Oregon ever won. And Becky Sisley s softball team has been substituting a wood floor for grass since January Then again, with Oregon s bas ketball team 17th ranked and the Flying Ducks tops in the country, perhaps it's not easy to get into the swing of spring sports. But don t tell that to any spring sports teams. Some, like the track team, for example, have been training daily since school started For them, the pay-off is in the spring. It's not a utopia, spring in Oregon. Mel Krause still requires his players to know as much about tarp-rolling as they do about baseball. And. no. there won't be any stuck-up UCLA teams to em barrass But what the heck, it’s a good time of year. Like the rest of the seasons, it offers things no other time of year can. So take a brillo pad and shine your irons or have your racquet strings tightened or start putting together your IM soft ball team or just start thinking about how good it feels to spend an afternoon at Howe Field or jog ging to Alton Baker or watching a handful of milers zero in on sub four-minutes After all, it’s only a month away.
