Sportfolio Harshman: OSU should forfeit SEATTLE (AP)— If Marv Harshman, basketball coach at Washington, has his way, Oreg on State s Pac-8 record will be scrubbed from the league standings. Harshman says the Beavers' Lonnie Shelton, who was declared ineligible, played in aii but one of Oregon State's eight victories and three defeats this season. And, said Harsh man, "historically, teams have forfeited their games, when it was discovered they used an ineligible player." If such a thing did happen, UCLA would currently be 10-1, Washington 9-2 and Oregon and Washington State 8-3. Raveling confident of play-off bid PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Cougars, enjoying their best basketball season since 1970, don’t want to be watching television after March 6. They'd rather be on it. Coach George Raveling says the Cougars, now 17-&and 7-9 in Pac-8 play, have a good chance at a post-season tournament berth if they can win two of their remaining three games. "We re going after the games in Oregon," Raveling said Monday of Thursday’s game at Oregon State and Saturday’s contest at Oregon. "We re tired of sitting home watching basketball tourna ments on television,” he said. "Our kids want to go some where. If we go 20-6, we ll go somewhere.” "Our best shot is at the NIT National Invitational Tourna ment,” said Raveling. “Ifwe win all three, though, we would probably be tied for second in the conference and 20-6 should be strong consideration for an NCAA bid.” %rm a n VOLKSWAGEN MERCEDES • DATSUN • TOYOTA guenter schoener reliable service for \ I your foreign car. Washington, Oregon s Thurs day night opponent, moved up from 11 th to eighth with a pair of wins over Stanford and Cal. Indiana, the top-rated team for the entire basketball season, sur vived a scare from Purdue and beat Minnesota last week to stay undefeated in 23 games this sea son. But it was UCLA, national champions 10 of the past 12 years, which had the rudest awakening, dropping from fifth to ninth place after losing to the Ducks Saturday night. The loss was UCLA's fourth in 24 games this season and the first at its home court, Pauley Pavilion, in 99 games. The Bruins wound up with 371 points and were completely left off five ballots. Oregon State should whip the Cougars by seven but suffer a three-point loss to Washington. UCLA, meanwhile, is expected to rebound with a pair of wins in the Bay area while USC should continue on its collision course with Oreqon s record of 14-straight Pac-8 losses Pacific-8 Team 1 Washington 2 UCLA 3.0regon 4 Oregon State 5 Washington State 6 Southern CaMotrua 7 Stanford 8 California Thursday s games Oregon by t over Washington Oregon State by 7 over Washington State Saturday s games Pec-8 8 3 9-2 8-3 8-3 7-4 0-11 1-10 34 Season 21 3 20-4 17-9 16-8 17-6 11-13 7-17 11-12 Rating 81 03 79 71 77 58 74 54 71 41 68 70 87 71 67 01 Friday s games Oregon by 10 over Washington Slate UCLA by 9 over Stanford UCLA by 9 over Cantorrva Washing!on by 3 over Oregon Slate Stanford by 2 over USC California by 2 over USC UO settles back to earth as Husky battle nears There s only one problem with beating UCLA by 20 points at Pauley Pavilion: coming down out of the clouds in time for your next game It's doubly important that Oregon returns to reality quickly because eigth-ranked Washing ton invades McArthur Court Thursday night for a game that could ultimately decide which team will be selected for post season play. For openers, Oregon has upped its field goal percentage to 470 and .486 in Pac-8 play. The Ducks have now won nine games in a row—seven in Pac-8 play—and have outscored their nine opponents by an average of almost 16 points a game (77.7 to 62). Oregon has won by margins of 31,20, 19, 15, 15, 13, 12. three and two points. Depth has been a key factor. I continue to be very pleased with the 12-man effort we ve been get ting throughout this winning streak," said Harter. Another reason for Oregon s success has been the dominating play of Ballard. The junior forward has averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds since the second Stan ford game. He s pulled down 10 or more rebounds the last six games in a row, something he did only nine times in the previous 20 games. G.B. is simply playing as well as any forward in this league,” said Harter. And there are some darned good ones around."
