KISS to perform at Fairgrounds Wednesday ELO provides good show Sometimes it was hard to see the group through the smoke, but the Electric Light Orchestra provided a good show full of flash, gimmicks, and unusual ideas at the Fairgrounds last Saturday night. So much of some substance or other was being By SAM RAINEY burned that the drummer was often invisible, lost in the acrid fog. Giving the Electric Light Orchestra its distinctive sound is the cello playing of Hugh McDowell and Melvin Gale, featured in a spirited rendition of “Showdown." An amazing solo by MacDowell early in the set was the most memorable moment of the evening. Mik Kaminski played electric violin with a driving, energetic style. Occasionally the emphasis on bowed string instruments caused the music to sound repetitive, but the group played with enough inspira tion to keep things interesting. The light show was less successful, partly be cause the Fairgrounds is a terrible place for a light show (it’s not exactly ideal for a rock concert, either). A laser, used without much imagination, and mul ticolored light flashes provided visual dazzle. Little Feat opened the show and pleased the fun-hungry crowd with a nonstop dose of their pecul iar brand of rock and roll. Lowell George, looking like a hog farmer who happens to be highly talented, did full justice to in tense numbers like ‘Tripe Face Boogie" with gritty vocals and soaring guitar. Inspiration seemed to be somewhat lacking, but Little Feat’s performance was enthusiastic, loud, and lively enough to keep the audience on its feet throughout. Appearing at the Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Feb. 18, is a group that specializes in mood music—for the kind of mood where you fee! like blowing up buildings or wrecking cars. Kiss is coming, but you'd be better off gritting your teeth than puckering your lips. Kiss’s brain-stomping, pulverising rock and roll is secondary to its theatrics, which have included explosions, fireworks, snow machines, and a bleed ing bassist. The determined hysteria of the New York-based group should not be taken too seriously, except by those who have always wanted to experience Ar mageddon. No wonder the Russians think we re de cadent. ♦ Valentine’s Day show benefit for 10 point 5 10point 5 is a quarterly magazine of the arts, a medium for people to share their creative ener gies.
