REVIEW The monster is not asleep The Dead are on vacation, but the monster is not asleep. Jerry Garcia's new album Re flections is probably a good ex ample of what the Dead would sound like if they were called the Jerry Garcia Review. By GLEN OZONEWOOD The entire band joins Garcia on most of the songs on Reflec tions. Add the likes of Nicky Hop kins. John Kahn, and Mickey Hart and that s a lot of talent squeezed Into the grooves of a polyvinyl disk. Reflections" is a lot slower than Garcia's first album, and a lot more Garcia than his second. Robert Hunter and Garcia wrote four of the eight songs, and Garcia adapts the remaining tunes so well to his own style that they sound like his alone. The best song on the first side is "They Love Each Other." Anyone who's heard Garcia and his new band has probably heard this tune performed. It's a loose-knit song where one keeps expecting the band to take off on a 20-minute jam; a song that performed live leaves the audience straining to remember where the hell the music started from, and how it got to where it ended. Garcia s guitar work takes over the nervous sys tem and the listener finds his or her body swaying and moving to and fro quite independently of any conscious effort. The second side starts off with a new interpretation of Hunter's "It Must Have Been the Roses. Garcia does the song a lot faster and a lot lighter than the Dead do it in concert. I think it’s better done slowly, but Garcia s version is an interesting approach worth listen ing to. Roses is followed by a Hank Ballard tune, Tore Up Over You. " This is a real rocker that s liable to pull you out of your seat and push you into motion. Garcia has a way of producing riffs that shoot through your body and make your heart beat a half a count faster The beauty of it is that he does it without a bass line volume close to 10 and some strong-arm drummer beating a bass drum as hard as he can. In general the album is a good one and worth the purchase price. If you'd like to hear it before mak ing up your mind to buy it, tune to 91.1 on the F.M. dial Monday at midnight when KWAX-II brings you an evening with Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. )(c CLOSER THAN HOME... and Night Owl Specials Too 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. OMELETTE SURPRISE - 2 eggs, cheese, onion and chili.
