Newspaper Page TextNiewood displays musical magic By SAM RAINEY The dazzling tones of Gerry Niewood's saxophone and flute added a brilliance to the some times lilting, often fiery sound of Gerry Niewood the Chuck Mangione uuariei in their performance last Wednes day night in the EMU Ballroom. A crowd of 850 responded in clamorous approval throughout, delivering a standing ovation fol lowing the high-energy finale. The finest moments of the first set belonged to Niewood, who displayed musical magic on a var iety of instruments in quick suc cession. Between driving sax ophone solos he played a nimble piccolo and a lyrical flute, most captivatingly in the rendition of ‘Soft." Mangione's flugelhorn was rich, full, and often exhilarating. A solid wave of applause greeted every virtuoso performance. His im aginative keyboard was heard on many of the selections, most of them taken from recent albums, including “Chasing the Clouds Away." Joe LaBarbera s deft drum solo was well-received, but jarred these ears. The pounding bass drum line seemed too thunderous for the airy melody in which it was framed. The Quartet s most distinctive musical form is a sweet, simple melody progressing into complex dancing variations. On Legend of the One Eyed Sailor the Quartet s slightly avant-garde quality was most ap parent, a flavor with a Latin edge to it.
