WASHINGTON (AP) — Anne
Armstrong, the highest ranking
woman in government during the
Nixon administration, will be
named ambassador to Great
Britain, government officials
report.
The White House declined to
confirm the nomination on
Tuesday, but sources said
privately that she would be
nominated. They expressed
optimism that her nomination
would be confirmed by the
Senate.
The appointment would make
Armstrong, 48. the first American
woman named ambassador to a
major embassy since Clare
Boothe Luce served as U S
ambassador to Rome from 1952
to 1957. She also would be the
first woman envoy named by a
major country to London, officials
said
Armstrong was co-chairer of the
Republican National Committee
from 1971 to 1973 She stepped
down to become a presidential
counselor under Presidents
Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford
She is married to millionaire
Texas cattleman Tobin Armstrong
of Armstrong, Tex. The couple
has five children.
In the London post, Armstrong
would succeed Elliot Richardson
as U S ambassador to the Court
of St James Richardson is now
