Center sets spiritual fest
Group believes
all religions are
on even footing
The Smiling Forehead Sufi
Center is sponsoring a “One in
the Spirit Festival” in the EMU
Ballroom Saturday from noon to
10 p.m.
If the only thing that made
sense to you in the former
sentence was “EMU Ballroom,”
try this:
There is a group of persons in
Eugene who practice Sufism, and
believe that all religions are
equally valid, and, although
persons believe in different
"messengers,” ’the spirit and
message is basically the same.
The Sufi feels that it is his goal to
realize unity in his daily life.
The “One in the Spirit Festival”
is to be a celebration of this unity
through the bringing together of
persons and groups that are into
varied ways of seeking spiritual
awareness.
Listed here are the events and
workshops that will be taking
place and the groups that will be
represented. Exact times will be
posted in the EMU.
Organizers of the festival
encourage persons to come and
not only talk with the followers of
these different paths, but also
become participants in the
workshops, dancing and ac
tivities, in order to make it truly a
festival of unity.
A $1 donation is asked for
admission to the festival. All
proceeds from the event will be
used by the Sufi Center and also
a spiritual journal entitled One in
the Spirit, published by Alankara
Distributing Society of the North
west, a non-profit organization.
The journal contains art, poetry
and articles on music, astrology,
spiritual teachers and the role of
women in religion.

Futurist analyzes society
By STEVE TWEDT
Of the Emerald
Robert Theobald doesn’t like the way things are going. Theobald,
a futurist, analyzes trends in society and forecasts their possible
outcome and he says, “We have little time left to create a society in
which we would want to live.”
Speaking at a press conference at the Eugene Hotel Thursday
morning, Theobald told of his challenge fa people to reverse trends of
increasing unemployment and inflation. “We have to feel a com
mitment to finding ways to change,” he said.
“We need to have an understanding fa the system and a com
mitment from people to not ask fa so much,” Theobald said, “I’m
looking fa volunteerism in the sense of gaining a stronger community
spirit.”
Theobald, a masters graduate of the economics programs at
Cambridge and Harvard, waks fa the Nathwest Regional Foun
dation, which is an outgrowth of the environmental symposium series
at Expo 74.
“The Nathwest is one of the few places left where there is some
trust,” Theobald said, “Few places enjoy a cooperation between their
institutions to improve their society. Finding a method of cooperation
is the key change needed in our society.”
Theobald feels the changes must come on the community level
because of the failure of the federal government to be able to help out
cities.
“Our next election could be disastrous because ue’re not
discussing the key issues,” Theobald said. “Politicians are looking at
elections in terms of the numbers of voters who won't vote fa them.
They figure the mae vague they are about discussing issues, the
fewer the voters who won’t vote fa them."
Theobald says that even though many people are dissatisfied,
people do not act because they feel they are unable to do anything.
“We don’t have apathy,” Theobald said. “We have a very high level of
frustration.”
