Bob Lanier's sneakers were a shoe-in to win a Sasquatch award in the Freedom Train’s sports exhibit.
Train_
while it is not for the squeamish,
it is a superb example of
technological inanity lifted to a
level of artistry that has seldom
seen an equal.
Sports, highlighted by car
seven, has got to be the sen
timental favorite, liberally laced
with tiny motion picture screens
re-running great plays of the
century and displaying the
bushel-basket footwear of
basketball near-great Bob Lanier.
Number eight, which
specializes in the performing
als, has some nice stuff, in
cluding an architectural montage
of whacked-up movie marquees
and a few mini-screens showing
Fred Astaire puttin' on his top hat
while an Oscar and an Emmy look
on.
The next car, however, is the
undisputed winner of the whole
schmeer. Through some truly fine
examples of such American
favorites as Homer, Wyeth and
Remington, this “fine arts”
exhibit brings a needed touch of
(Continued from Page 1)
class to the garish style of the
exhibits in general, and with the
lilting background of Gershwin’s
“American in Paris” it provides a
welcome chance for the viewer to
catch his patriotic breath.
The Freedom Train is definitely
not the greatest American in
vention since the Spaghetti-O.
The conveyor belt is too fast, the
Army flunkies who continually
grunt “watch your step” quickly
become a nuisance, and the
plethora of hawkers selling tons
of “Freedom Train” mugs and
bumper stickers can send one
racing to his little red book. But
in the final analysis, anyone with
a couple of spare hours (and a
couple of spare bucks to match)
should check the thing out. It’s
really not too bad, and even if we
do manage to keep Jefferson’s
“noble experiment” going, the
Tricentennial Freedom Train is a
long way off.

Manager 344-9782
Stewart, Bylund address
District 41 Democrats
By TOM FLUHARTY
Of the Emerald
John Stewart, a University
student, announced Wednesday
night that he intends to run again
for the District 41 seat in the
Oregon House of Representatives
in 1976. The announcement came
at a meeting of District 41
Democrats. See related story on
page 5.
In other business at the
meeting, Ken Bylund, county
assessor, discussed tax law
changes and his problems with
the Lane County Administration.
One of the biggest changes, he
said, is due to an administrative
ruling by the Oregon Department
of Revenue that allows renters
who failed to file for renters relief
to now collect retroactively for
those years.
Bylund also stated that proof
of rent payments is no longer
required. This saves a person
from running around to old
landlords and collecting rent
receipts, he explained. However,
as Bylund understands it, if the
revenue department decides to
audit a renter, proof must be
submitted just as in the case of
income taxes.
Persons wishing more in
formation should contact the
revenue department.
Another change is that county
appraisers will no longer inspect
improvements on a house every
time a building permit is taken
out, Bylund said. Houses will
now be brought up to market
values in 6-year cycles.
Jack Delay, District 41
Democratic chairer, explained to
persons attending the meeting
some of the changes in the
delegate selection process.
Delegates to the national
convention will be selected by
precinct committee persons who
will be elected in the May, 1976
primary election. Oregon law now
requires persons running for
committee to list their
presidential choice or list
themselves as uncommitted.
Delegates will be awarded to
presidential candidates on the
basis of the number of votes they
receive in the primary.
