Choirs present concert
The University Chamber Choir and the University Singers will
present their first concert this season Sunday at 8 p.m., in Beall
Concert Hall.
The Chamber Choir will perform the “Missa quinis vocibus super
Doiorosi martyr” by Czech composer Krystof Harant.
The University Singers will perform works by Heinrich Schutz,
Charles Theodore Pachelbel, Felix Mendelssohn, Louis Davis, E.
Rautavaara, Johann N. David and one traditional gospel work.
The Program also will feature varied instrumentation ranging from
conti nuo to electronic tape.
The concert is open to the public free of charge.
Emerald errs; PDC meets today,
AD pass exchange until Thursday
Errors appeared in Wednesday’s Emerald regarding the time
period for the exchange of season athletic passes and the date of the
ASUO Programs’ Directors Council (PDC). The required athletic
exchange is scheduled to run through Thursday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m. the
PDC meeting will be held in the EMU Forum room at 4:30 today.
The Emerald regrets the errors.
Harris to give radio broadcast
Fred Harris begins his New Hampshire Primary campaign tonight
with a nationwide broadcast. Harris, a populist Democrat, will present
his ideas and appeal for funds. While Harris is speaking, several area
Democrats will be having friends in to hear and to discuss what Harris
has to say.
The theme of the Harris campaign is redistribution of corporate
wealth and power.
The speech will be carried by KZEL-FM 96.1 at 7:30 p.m.
Courtyard
blaze set for
demonstration
About five gallons of gas will
be set ablaze and extinguished at
noon today in the lower courtyard
of the EMU. The demonstration is
sponsored by the University’s
safety program and is intended to
show students how to use fire
extinguishers to deal with home
fires. The demonstration will be
repeated on Friday.
ASUO budget
meeting today
A Program Directors Council
meeting, designed to give ASUO
funded programs input into the
Executive budget criteria
process, will be held today at
4:30 in the Forum Room, EMU.
The meeting, initiated by Jim
Davis, ASUO vice-president, will
also provide the opportunity for
discussion of the proposed
budget — counter budget
process and time table.

Company pulls product
Johnson Wax Company has announced it will curtail unsolicited
mass mailings of their product “Shout" following a number of con
sumer complaints and a request from the Oregon Student Public
Interest Research Group (OSPIRG).
“Shout” contains tetrechloroethylene and petroleum distillates,
which are harmful to the eyes and lungs. The product samples were
mailed in easily opened boxes; consumers were worried that children
might harm themselves by ingesting the product.
John S. Ullman, OSPIRG staff scientist, pointed out that “the box
and can state that the product should be kept from children. Un
fortunately the age group of children who could be most easily harmed
by “Shout” can't read the warning.”
OSPIRG investigated the legality of sending hazardous products
like “Shout" through the mail and found that the post office does not
have the authority to prohibit mailing of such products.
Sen. Mark Hatfield has asked the Senate Committee on the Post
Office and Civil Service to examine the possibility of. remedial
legislation designed to keep unsolicited samples of hazardous
products from the mails.
Spanish historian to speak on
prospects for change in Spain
The EMU Cultural Forum will present noted Spanish historian,
Gabriel Jackson Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Rm. 167 EMU. He will speak
about the “Prospects For Change In Spain.”
Jackson is currently a history professor at the University of
California, San Diego. He graduated from both Harvard and Stanford
Universities and was the recipient of a Fulbright Post-doctoral
Fellowship for study in Spain from 1961-62.
He has written five books dealing with Spanish history, two of
which dealt specifically with the Spanish Civil War and Francisco
Franco’s rise to power. The public is welcome and no admission will
be charged.
