audience. Even the band’s stage
presence is filled with the "slap
and-jive” attitude that typifies so
much of the rock world.
The vocals of Lydia Pense and
the keyboards of Raul Matute had
some of the spark present in the
band’s early releases, and when
the band was playing as one unit
there were some good moments,
but the solos were boring and I
found myself thinking, “there are
probably better guitar players at
Murphy’s tonight.”
Rufus did little to make the
evening more exciting.
Chaka Khan did not have the
vocal power of Pense, and while
Rufus’ instrumentals had a little
more punch than Cold Blood's,
they still did little to keep my hips
shaking and my feet moving.
On the whole the show seemed
aimed at the multitude of 14 and
15-year-olds present and both the
bands and the promoters seemed
to be relying on the fact that
concert-starved Eugene will turn
out to see most any live music.
