Climbers thrive on Cascades
In a few hours you could be far from the city, noise, crowds, and pollution. You could
be climbing Mount Jefferson, exploring craters on Mount Washington, hiking up Diamond
Peak or gazing at the Three Sisters, each of which is surrounded by a wilderness area —
land set aside by Congress that is barred from development, motorized equipment or
exploitation ot any sort.
The Mount Jefferson wilderness area is dominated by Mount Jefferson, 10,947 feet
high, and Three Fingered Jack, 7,841 feet high. One hundred fifty lakes scattered through
out the region are accessible by 160 miles of trails.
The Mount Washington wilderness area is a rugged, lava-covered territory. Big Lake,
just below 7,802 foot Mount Washington, is a popular fishing spot.
The Three Sisters wilderness area is the largest in the Willamette National Forest and
the most easily accessible from Eugene. The South Sister is an especially popular climb,
requiring no special mountaineering equipment. Many of the lakes scattered throughout
the region are stocked with trout. There are 14 glaciers on the slopes of the Three Sisters;
one of them, Collier Glacier, is the largest in Oregon.
Diamond Peak is the main attraction in the Diamond Peak wilderness area, though
7,138 foot Mount Yoran offers good rock climbing.
All of these areas are open year round. Maps and information are available from the
Forest Service.
