Cross-country skiing combines beauty, solitude and exercise in an increasingly popular
sport.

The sky is bright blue and the air so cold it
seems it may shatter every time your warm
breath hits it. The world is tri-colored; the
blue sky, green trees and white snow domi
nate the spectrum, as though nature has
sworn allegiance to a foreign power
The snow is lighter than eider down and
gives a dry squeech with each step. Your
strides take you fifteen feet at a time and
you soon crest the ridge and reach timber
line The mountain, obscured by trees until
now, comes suddenly into view.
The sun is high in the sky. Finding a large
rock with a view you break out lunch. Sour
dough French bread, Gouda cheese and a
bottle of dry white wine packed carefully to
reach its optimum temperature of 54 de
grees (it’s probably too cold, but who
cares?), add a good friend and you have a
perfect lunch.
These are a few of the jobs that might be
found on a cross-country ski trip.
What equipment do I need?
The amount of equipment necessary for
ski touring is fairly minimal: skis, poles,
boots, warm clothing and a little food
Skis are a complex subject in them
