    Who fought who at
Job Corps Center?
(Continued from Page 3)
A front-page two-part series in
the Tuesday, June 29 and Thurs
day, July,1,1965 Emerald by
editor ChucK Beggs reported re
cent violence at the Tongue Point
Job Corps Center near
Astoria—the same Tongue Point
Job Corps Center from which the
University recently withdrew its
support. Douglas Olds, the center

The ODE
director, blamed "a hard core of
Black Muslim followers” for the in
cidents. But Willy Murray, a black
student leader at the center said
he knew of no Black Muslims who
lived there.
The Tongue Point Center
opened in an abandoned naval
base on Feb. 1,1965. When viol
ence erupted so soon after its
opening, state and University offi
cials were troubled. Then-Gov.
Mark Hatfield asked for federal
troops one week before Beggs'
first story was published when
“newspapers around the state
carried stories of outbreaks of ra
cial fights at the base,” Beggs re
ported. However, Murray as
serted that the fighting was not a
racial confrontation. It included
whites fighting, he said.
