Can weary Ducks revive?
Well, here we go again — it’s
do-or-die week, installment
number three.
While Beaver Fever has en
gulfed Linn and Benton counties,
Oregon’s own Big-Green-Butt
Kicking machine has had enough
trouble slapping hands let alone
booting anyone.
Coach Dick Harter takes his
Kamikaze dive bombers into the
land of rolling fog, which
Stanford’s Rich Kelley seems to
spend most of his time in — and
roller-coaster cable cars — which
resembles California’s season,
seeking to regain some lost
momentum.
Tonight the Ducks will be up in
the hills of Berkeley looking to
snag Rickie Hawthorne, Carl Bird,
Jay Young or any other stray bear.
It was six weeks and a million
crises ago, that Oregon failed to
control California down the stretch
and finally suffered its first loss of
the season, 60-58.
Since then things have been all
downhill — conference-wise, that
is. The Ducks have won but two
Pac-8 games since then and
stand in seventh place. California
on the other hand has won their
last three games—all league coun
ters — and seven out of their last
eight contests.
Hawthorne is the Bears top
scorer with a 16.1 average, while
Connie White and Bird follow with
13.5 and 13.4 respectively.
Hang gliders hit the air
Hang gliders from throughout
the Northwest will meet at
Peterson’s Butte near Lebanon
this weekend for Oregon’s first
competitive hang-glider’s meet.
The competition, labeled the
First Annual Oregon Frostbite
Championships, is being spon
sored by the Southern Oregon
Hang Gliders Association and the
dfegon Free Air Farce. Several
Eugene-area hang gliders and
association members are co
ordinating the event.
“We expect anywhere from 50
to 100 pilots to be flying,” said
Bernie Wolfard, a Springfield
hang glider manufacturer and one
of the meet's directors.
“Peterson's Butte is the best site
in the Willamette Valley because
there’s a clear landing area and
lots of wind.”
Pilots who would like to com
pete in the meet may register at
the contest site Saturday or Sun
day for a $5 entrance fee. Genera!
admission to the meet is $1 per
day and competition will last from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Senior Class Council
plans food drive
The Senior Class Council is
planning a food drive for the poor
this Sunday. The drive is planned
to restock Salvation Army shelves
that feed needy families in the
area.
Students will meet at Mac Court
at 10 a.m. and with the help of the
National Guard will go door-to
door asking for donations of can
ned goods.
Sponsors claim nearly two tons
of food were collected in the last
drive.
Further information can be ob
tained from Senior Class Presi
dent Jim Davis at 484-1013 or ext.
4314.

The Bears have to rate as the
most improved team in the con
ference. Coming off a sweep of
the Washington schools they
should be ready to improve on
their 5-4 league and 15-6 overall
records.
On the other side of the bay, in
the shadow of Hoover Tower, the
Cardinals of Stanford are still try
ing to decide which aspect of bas
ketball meets their desires — win
ning or losing.
By the season s end they
should be experts at both. At this
point in the season, Stanford has
beat UCLA, USC and Oregon
State, the leagues top three
teams, while losing to Washing
ton, Oregon and Cal. Howie
Dallmar’s club record stands at
5-4 in league and 11-10 over-all.
Who cares about consistency,
eh Howie?
While Stanford hasn't exactly
been a model team this season
they still have the talent to beat
anyone, including themselves.
Kelley, the 7 foot center, who only
gets involved in about half
Stanford's games, is leading the
league in rebounding and is third
in scoring.
Ed Schweitzer is the teams
second leading scorer with a 16.1
average while chipping in eight
caroms a game. Scott Trobbe,
Tim Patterson, Melvin Atterberry
and Mike Bratz are all key players
for Stanford. But none is as im
portant as Kelley. If he plays well,
so does the team. Just ask John
Wooden or Bob Boyd.
If Oregon is going to make any
effort to stop their backward skid,
then this is the weekend. If not,
bring out the caskets.
