sports No love lost for Love Stan Love, still the career scor ing leader and Oregon basketball standout between 1968-70. found himself jobless Monday when he was put on waivers by the Los Angeles Lakers. Love still holds many Duck career records, but his profes sional career in the National Bas ketball Association has never been so glorious Love leads all time scorers with 1,644 points, career average with 21.1, field goal percentage (.493), total field goals (629), and free throw at tempts (546). Among Love s season records include highest average (24.6), field goal percentage (.518), field goals made (247) and a game re cord of 40 points. Love likewise holds many Pacific-8 records under the Oregon banner. In the pros, the 6-foot-9 forward began his career with a 7.9 and 6.4 average in his first two years with the Baltimore Bullets before being traded to the Lakers, where he was primarily a reserve averag ing 5.6 last year and 7.2 this sea son. Love was named to the all tournament team three straight years at the Far West Classic, and was the most valuable player in 1970 Also that year, Love s team best USC and UCLA back-to-back at home, a feat since unheard of. Let the scoreboard re main motionless for the time being. McArthur Court needs a rest. Bring on a subtle sport. One made up of the grades and skills of a well-tuned human body. Add an easy-going audience. Call it gymnastics. The old grey ivy-covered building can take that. And continue to be a showplace of the nation's best athletes. Wien Oregon and California square off in com pulsory competition Thursday night at eight, and By KEN MAYS Of the Emerald again in optionals Friday night along with Stanford, the fans here will be treated to the finest gymnastics the country has to offer this year Oregon gymnastics coach Bill Ballester calls his team and Cal both members of the "half dozen or so teams capable of winning it all. The Flying Ducks are currently rated fifth in the country with a 214.0, and Cal is typically a late comer The Bears are perennial winners of the Pac-8 title, seven in a row to be exact. Too many people will stay away from the meet because they have no idea what a 214 8 means Even many who do come will have to wait for the meet's end and the voice of the announcer to tell them who won, and even then they won t know why. In gymnastics, there are no statistics to tell you who won the battle of the boards, who shot better from the field, how many first downs or runners left on base there were So the average fan sits back to enjoy the sheer grace of it all, applauds Leonard Henderson s double back and Japanese handstand, and enjoys all the amazing things a body can do after it trains three hours a day for five years. But if Eugene can appreciate track, an individual-team sport with similar scoring and lineup strategies, it can team to appreciate gymnastics With meets that the gymnastics hotbeds of the coun try would love to have in their home courts, we owe it to ourselves. After all, Eugene is fast-becoming one of those "hotbeds”. The lineup stragy in particular is interesting for the Cal-Oregon meet, which will be a preview of the Pac-8 meet in March. At this point, it’s hard to tell who holds the advantage Probably Cal, because the Bears go with three Oympic-caliber all-around men in Tom Weeden, Steve Posner and Tom Beech. The Bears fill the remaining two “specialist’ positions in most of the six events with other all-arounds Since Berkeley's all-around men are all quite good, the four counting scores in each event should all be dose to nine or over. In fact, all five competitors in each event for Cal can score in that range, giving the Bears a little margin for error. Ballester’s Flying Ducks don’t have that. Oregon has some of the best specialists in the country. In fact, the Ducks could win every event, but lose the meet. While the first and second scores might be 9.6 and 9.3, it's the third and fourth scores you must watch for, where Oregon’s good all-around men will duel Berkeley’s great ones And if all the Ducks can muster is an 8 3 and an 8.5 to go along with the 9.6 and 9.3, then Berkeley still wins with its 8.8, 8.8, 9.0 and 9 2. To put it into more concrete terms, Oregon will probably go with Steve Roskam, Bob Rikli and Scott Phillips as all-arounders. Good as that trio is, it is not as good as Berkeley s trio of Posner, Beech and Weeden, all of whom may end up in the Olympics. So Oregon must score consistently close to nine with its all-arounders, then use its superior specialists for the winning edge Namely Leonard Henderson in floor exercise, Joe Percival on side horse, Scott McEl downey on nngs, Randy Lary in vaulting and high bar and Mark Stone on high bar Those performances, along with a few sparkling routines by the all-arounders and Berkeley's three or four specialists, will be the kind o^ 9.4-9.6 marvels that bring down the house. But the coaches eyes will be on those third and fourth place routines, where the real contest between the two teams will be decided. In the UCLA Invitational two weeks ago, Cal broke a few pommel horse routines and Oregon won. As Ballester puts it, “with two teams so evenly matched, it just depends on the day...and the attitude One broken event can blow the meet" So the pressure will be there, but it will be of a quiet sort. A chess game. After last weekend, it might seem a little like Brahms following Alice Cooper THURSDAY.
