Public presents various views
to Energy Advisory Committee
The Governor's Energy Advisory Committee held
a public hearing Tuesday night at the Eugene Hotel
to give citizens a chance to express their views on
Oregon's energy policy.
The committee was established by the -1973
legislature to draft a proposed long-range energy
policy for Oregon and to recommend legislation on
energy-related issues to the 1975 legislative session.
The committee will include the public's ideas and
opinions when it presents its findings to the
legislature.
The hearing was presided over by Jonn Reynolds,
a professor of architecture at the University and a
member of the Eugene Water and Electric Board.
Reynolds first asked for general statements from the
audience of approximately 50 persons.
George Adams, Eugene, stated that he thought
the committee should stop wasting time on more
energy studies. "The nation is over-run with studies
now. What we need to do is start doing something
about it."
Annabel Kitzhaber, representing the League of
Women Voters of Central Lane County, said the
league favors state support of mass transit,
government funding of research of alternative
energy supplies, and better enforcement of Oregon's
55-mile-per-hour speed limit.
Robert Gray, Eugene, felt that a way should be
found to make solar heat installation more com
petitive with other energy sources. He suggested
low-interest state loans for solar heat installations
and the exemption of solar collection systems from
the property tax.
The audience was asked twice for a show of hands
to indicate its feelings. Most of those present favored
progressive power rates (those who use less pay
less). The audience was strongly against nuclear
power as a solution to energy needs.
The committee members were asked what they
felt are the state's top energy priorities. Matthew
Gould, environmental control director for Georgia
Pacific Corporation, said there is "clearly a lack of
adequate mechanization to coordinate the state's
energy policies a: present" and stressed the need for
such a body. He said there will be several bills before
the next legislative session to create a state energy
policy organization..
Other suggestions brought up at the hearing were
the conversion of animal wastes to methane gas and
the taxing of vehicles by weight and horsepower.

Weber's music for "Der Freischutz" heralded the beginning of \
the Romantic era in German opera. :■
