Despite half Troy's stats
Ducks unimpressed with USC
By BOB WELCH
Of the Emerald
Nebraska could beat Southern Cal, the Trojans will
have trouble disposing of California and the Bears'
Chuck Muncie is a better runner than SC's much
talked-of Anthony Davis.
Such is the consensus of the Oregon football team
following Saturday's 16-7 loss to the Trojans.
"No way they could beat Nebraska," said
defensive end George Martin. "Cal, USC could go
either way. USC's got a better line but Cal's got
better backs."
"They (USC) rose to the occasion," said tailback
Don Reynolds. "But, actually, I wasn't that im
pressed with them. They're a fundamentally sound
football team and they're good, but not that good."
Ron Hunt, the big offensive tackle who spent his
afternoon fending off — or trying to — SC's massive
line, said the Trojans were "equal to Nebraska but
Cal-USC is even."
"USC's not very enthusiastic," said linebacker
Tom Varu, who was credited with 11 unassisted
tackles. "At least Cal had fun while they were
beating us. USC seemed like they were just out there
waiting for the pros. I'd like to see Cal beat 'em."
If the Duck players weren't awed by the Trojans as
a team, they weren't exactly lavishing Anthony Davis
with compliments either.
"They run a damn good sweep and Davis is really
quick" said linebacker Derrel Mehl, in on 13
unassisted tackles. "But Muncie was harder to
tackle. He's stronger and has better balance."
"Anthony Davis doesn't rate that high in my
book," said Martin. "There's no comparison bet
ween him and Muncie, both as a player and as a
person."
While the Ducks weren't overly impressed with
Davis and the Trojans, one thing's for sure. It's nice
to have A.D. £t Co. for only one game a season.
