Crew heads for nationals
The women s crew at uregon
compiled a seventh place team
finish in a ten team field at the
Regional Rowing Championships
held last weekend on Green Lake
in Seattle.
Oregon placed four of their five
entries among the top three boats
in their respective divisions but
lack of entries in an 18-event
rowing program relegated them to
the seventh place spot.
The lightweight pair of Jeanne
Arnold and Robin Kronstad
finished third behind Green Lake
and the University of Washington.
This boat won its way into the
finals with a heat victory over
Green Lake in 4:28.4.
The heavyweight pair of Debbie
Sprecher and Vanne Pratt
finished second in a six boat final
with a clocking of 4:56.2. Oregon
won its way into the final with a
heat victory earlier in the day with
a 4:37.2 time.
In lightweight fours, Oregon
finished second in a five boat final
with a clocking of 4:32.6, trailing
the University of Washington by
just over a length. The Ducks
rowed their way into the finals
with a heat victory in 4:31.3.
Oregon's heavyweight four
finished fourth in a five boat final
as the University of Washington
cruised to an easy victory, but the
final three boats were all within a
few seconds of each other. The
heavyweight four won its way
into the final with a third place
finish in a preliminary heat with a
4:21.3 time.
Biggest disappointment came
for Oregon in the lightweight
eight race when a protested start
placed the Ducks a length behind
at the outset and a strong rally
throughout the race pulled them
to third spot just one second
behind runner-up Seattle Pacific.
Oregon's time in the lightweight
eight race was 4:35.0.
Oregon's women's crew will
enter three boats in the Nationals
held June 14, 15, and 16. The
heavyweight pair, lightweight four
and lightweight eight boats will
comprise the Oregon contingent
to Lake Merritt in Oakland, Calif.
Coach Marti Abts says all three
boats have a good chance of
placing in the top three in the
top three in the Nationals.
Because of the high entry fees
for this regatta th9 women's crew
team is trying to raise funds to
help defray the cost of sending
three boats to the Nationals.

Netters victorious in finale
rour universny or uregon
women left the Northwest
Championship Tennis Tour
nament in Corvallis Saturday with
three trophies, a clear cham
pionship victory and an admirable
record of seven wins and one loss
as the season comes to an end.
The University of Oregon
women's tennis team placed first
in the Northwest tournament,
winning the team trophy with a
score of 21 points. The University
of Washington followed with 18,
and the rest of the teams lagged
far behind Washington State-4,
Montana 3, Western Washington
State College-3 and Oregon
State-1. The last time the
University of Oregon won the
championship was in 1966.
Number one singles player Mary
Miller played a good match
against Sue Goesling from the
University of Washington. In the
first set Goesling put up a steady
struggle and Miller wiped her out
in the second, scoring a 7-6, 6-0
victory. Miller won the number
one singles trophy, ending the
season appropriately. She
finished the season undefeated in
her matches, and in all the North
west tournaments she has played
in.
Tracy Tempest took the third
trophy in her number 2 singles
match against Caron Cartyon, also
from the University of
Washington. Tempest's sharp
serve and her strong sure stroke
were too much for Carlyon who
gave in to a 6-2, 6-4 win for
Oregon.
Heather Wilson and Linda
Prefontaine represented the
University of Oregon in the final
doubles match against Delores
Payne and Joanne James from
the University of Washington.
Wilson and Prefontaine work well
as a team, but their Washington
opponents outshone them on the
courts on Saturday. Payne and
James played an excellent match
winning a 6-3, 6-3 victory and the
doubles trophy.
Marti Sc hey coached the Oregon
women through a good season
this spring. Oregon played with
consistent confidence that was
enjoyable to watch. Their only
loss of the season was in the
PAC-8 tournament where they
placed fifth. Aside from that, they
had a resoundingly victorious
season with seven wins.
