The Lichtenstein Circus returns this term
Smorgasbord for beginners
Whether you’re interested in
acting, directing a play or
casting, Theater 199 could be of
interest to you—especially if
you’re interested in all three
areas.
A veritable smorgasbord,
this class offers students in
terested in the theater a sampling
of the many different aspects of
theater production.
According to Jean Cutler, one
of the instructors for the course,
demonstrations and materials—
live, electronic and mechanical,
will be used to teach the class.
Cutler and two other instructors,
Horace Robinson and Jerry
Williams, will teach most of the
class “with specialists called in
to cover two or three specific
areas,” according to Robinson.
The class will touch upon not
only acting, directing and casting
but also playwriting, costume
and set design, management and
lighting.
While the class will not at
tempt to give comprehensive
coverage of those different
topics, it will “attempt to teach
enough so the neophyte student
will know what he or she is in
terested in in the theater,”
Robinson said. “The class is an
indoctrination course, designed
primarily to be the first course a
student takes as an introduction
to the multiplicities and com
plexities of the theater.”
“This class is also for those
non-theater majors who want to
know that much about the
theater,” he said.
The class, which will be
taught in the University Theater,
is scheduled for Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. While the
class will meet four hours per
week, three credits are being
given for the course because “we
do not anticipate a great deal of
text usage for the class,”
Robinson explained.
This is the first time this
course is being offered but “it is
not intended to replace the basic
theater classes,” Robinson said.
“The course is meant to provide
an introduction into the theater.”
Students interested in taking
the class should visit the speech
table during registration.
