The forecast for the Stanford area this weekend calls for partly
cloudy skies, leading to intermittent showers and a Stanford victory
over Oregon. However, the Ducks may have different ideas with an
upset bid.
Stanford coach Jack Christiansen admits it will be tough for the
Cardinals to get up for the contest after last week’s debacle with USC,
a last second 27-26 loss. Said Christiansen, “With all the emotion and
disappointment of last week, it will be a challenge for us to regroup
and get ready for Oregon this Saturday.”
Stanford has a case history of falling asleep and playing dead to
the likes of San Jose St. and University of the Pacific. Last season, the
Cardinals sleepwalked to a 15-13 loss here in Eugene, which directly
attributed to Stanford’s worse Pac-8 conference record in years, 2-5.
Meanwhile, the Ducks would like to correct the shambles of the
losing season. If Oregon could win their final pair of conference
games, that would leave the Webfoots with a possible share of third
place and a very respectable 4-3 conference record.
“Dick Enright has done a good job with the Ducks,” said
Christiansen. “Even though they are young, they are very well
balanced and capable of beating anyone.”
An added threat to the Stanford offense with which Oregon will
have to contend with is placekicker Rod Garcia. The diminutive field
goal kicker nearly won the USC game by himself, kicking four field
goals and establishing himself as the premier field goal kicker in
NCAA history with 39 career field goals.
Garcia, a former Rose Bowl hero in Stanford’s more halcyonic
days, also booted a 59-yard field, the longest kick in the Los Angeles
Coliseum, pro or college.
“Rod Garcia’s performance on Saturday was absolutely
amazing,” said Christiansen, “I have always said that his range was
better than 60 yards, and he may not have kicked his longest one yet.”
. The Ducks can attest to those ominous words. Garcia kicked a 54
yarder in the rain of Eugene last year, and any time the Stanford of
fense nudges past the 50 yardline, Garcia may get a chance from 65
yards in.
With rain forecast by the weather service this weekend in Palo
Alto, the natural turf of Stanford Stadium may turn out to be a
quagmire. The Ducks attempted to lull UCLA into a fumbling contest
in Saturday’s downpour, but ended up coughing up the ball three times
in the third quarter alone, while UCLA lost just one fumble. Stanford
has been known to become butterfingered in adverse weather con
ditions..
To combat combat the fumbleitis, Coach Dick Enright promised
“to stress fundamentals all week and go 100 per cent on Saturday.”
Enright added, “There hasn’t been a game this year we haven’t been
in all the way. We have taken ourselves out of some games with our
own mistakes. We will continue to work hard on the things we must do
in order to improve.”
Saturday’s contest could be a stepping stone to a winning Pac-8
conference season for Oregon, or may turn out to be a lonely path
towards a miserable 2-9 record. Oregon State does not play dead in
Civil War games.
Peerless Prognostications
Joining the Peerless Progs line-up with one week
remaining to go are Eugene mayor Les Anderson and
University Athletic Director Norv Ritchey in a repeat
performance. Ritchey was the only Progster to go out off
the deep end and pick Oregon to upset Stanford, while
Mayor Anderson went consensus on all but three picks.
In the race for the Progs season title, Emerald
editorial assistant James Russell continues to lead
consensus by four picks with a 107-29-4 overall record.
Sports staffer Mike Yorkey (102-34-4) and News Editor
Drex Heikes (99-37-4) remain close, but, Russell hopes,
well out of reach.
“It shouldn’t have happened,” Yorkey was reported
to have said. “It’s this Oregon rain that blew it for me.”
Sports staffer Bob Welch* originally from Corvallis, is
still planning a comeback to be culminated with the
Oregon State-Oregon game next week.
