Tim Guy, Ron Hunt keys in big USC battle

Don Reynolds, a sly smile creasing his face, crosses
the goal line as half the California team gives up their
futile chase of the crafty tailback. Safely across,
Reynolds holds the ball and one finger in the air while
bouncing up and down. The crowd is wild.
Meanwhile, back at the 20-yard line where the play
evolved in football's “pit,” offensive tackle Ron Hunt
lies face down on the Astro Turf, shaken up. Tim Guy, the
other tackle, watches as Reynolds is bear-hugged by
huge LeFrancis Arnold in the end zone. The crowd
cheers on.
For Hunt and Guy—two key cogs in an Oregon front
line that has sprung Reynolds loose for 630 yards in only
five games—there is little glory.
And little sulking.
“I’ve always liked publicity,” says Guy, “but that’s
for the backs and the ends. Not many people like to
watch us down there in the hole. But that’s your life. I’ve
played the line long enough to know.”
Hunt admits the lack of publicity bothers him but
says he expects it and has learned to live with it. He
respects those that get publicity and especially the Duck
line.
“Donnie didn’t get all those yards by himself,” he
says. “When you see Donnie running good, you know the
line is blocking good. When we do our job right, he does
his job right.”
Reynolds is the first to agree.
“My yards are a direct result of their effort,” the
little tailback says. “When they execute right, you won’t
find anybody any better.”
Opening holes for Donnie Reynolds is added in
centive for Hunt and Guy.
“It makes you try harder with someone like him
back there,” says the latter. “I wanna give Donnie 1,000
yards. I know he can do it—probably before the last
game. He’s better than Anthony Davis at this point in the
season.”
Tomorrow could decide that. It’s Oregon vs.
Southern California and the Los Angeles sports writers
will get a look at the Duck’s secret weapon.
Both Guy and Hunt respect the Trojans. And both
think the Trojans can be beaten.
“To beat USC,” explains Guy, “It’ll take a team
effort. If we can keep together like we did in the second
half against Cal, we’re capable of taking it away from
them.
“Their record shows they’re pretty decent, but on
film they don’t look as good as last year. Of course they
have breakaway power in Lynn Swann (flanker) and
Anthony Davis (tailback) but they don’t have the
fullback and tight end that they had last year in Sam
Cunningham and Charlie Young. They’re never going to
lay down for you, you’ve just got to take it away from
them.”
Hunt sees the key to the game in how well the Oregon
line can contain USC’s experienced linebackers,
Richard Wood, and Charles Anthony and James Sims.
“We’ve got a great line,” says Hunt, “but a lot
depends on how well we block their linebackers. We can
score on ’em, I know that.”
Southern Cal likes to keep fresh defensive tackles
coming in often and the loss of starter Mike Hancock,
who had to undergo neck surgery this week, won’t make
the line crumble.
Coach Johnny McKay will probably start with
junior Glenn Byrd (6-4 231) and freshman Gary Jeter
(6-5, 250). However, junior Art Riley (6-4, 238), junior
Fred Marderian (6-4, 235) and sophomore George
Steward (6-4, 233) will probably be substitued in quite
freely.
Guy says it’s too hard to tell from films just how good
the defensive line of USC is. Hunt says they shouldn’t be
much of a problem.
Will the substituting hurt him?
“The only reason it would,” says Hunt, “is that they
all have different moves and I won’t be able to get used
to. any one guy’s moves. My biggest problem will be
picking up the defensive end, but I got him last year so I
think I can do the same this year.”
Both agree that Oregon is psyched up for the
Trojans.
“If we beat USC we’ve got a good chance for the
roses,” says Hunt.
And roses beat headlines any day.
Intramural wrestling
Intramural wrestling weigh-ins will be conducted
Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22 and 23 in the Men’s PE
locker room.
The wrestling room will be open for workouts on
Tuesdays and Thursdays before 10:30 a.m. and after
1:30 p.m. It will also be available Fridays between 10:30
a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Peerless Prognostications
Erupting from a three-way tie for second
piace, sophomore sports staffer Mike
Yorkey posted a remarkable 18-2 peerless
record this past week to blitz into first at
49-10-1 overall. Emerald editor Torrie
McAllister bolted into second place alone
on the strength of a 17-3 mark, with 48-11-1
total, and former progs leader James
Russell is sulking in third at 47-12-1 after
three weeks.
Guests- this week include Emerald
mailman Bill Stahl and Gratten Kerrans,
’70-’71 Emerald editor, who now works in
Salem with the legislature.
“This is my week. I’m hot,” news editor
Drex Heikes was reported to have boasted
when turning in his picks. Sophomores
Yorkey and Russell are going one on one
for the Emerald lead this week and editor
Torrie also seems to have but one ob
jective. The top. “You don’t get a 17-3
record for nothing,” she recently said.
Yorkey and Russell are remaining quiet as
Emerald secretary Joy Farthing (46-13-1)
sets her sights on being number one.
