Meditation society sets free lecture
The Students International Meditation Society will present an
introductory lecture tonight at 8 p.m. in 221 Allen Hall. The topic will
be transcendental meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The lecture will be free.
Nominations sought for service award
Nominations are being solicited for the University’s Distinguished
Service Award.
The award, presented annually at the June commencement, is in
recognition of persons “who by their knowledge and skills have made
a significant contribution to the cultural development of Oregon or
society as a whole.” No more than three awards are made in any one
year Current members of the faculty, staff, and students are not
eligible for the award.
Documented nominations, with references, should be sent to the
selection committee for the Distinguished Service Award, President’s
Office, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, 97403. Deadline for
receiving nominations is November 1, 1973.
Liberal Arts gets two administrators
Paul Holbo, acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts, has
announced that two members of the faculty have been named to ad
ministrative positions in the College.
Charles Wright, professor of mathematics, has been appointed
associate dean for academic personnel. A member of the University
faculty since 1961, he holds baccalaureate and masters degrees from
the University of Nebraska and a doctorate from the University of
Wisconsin. His field in mathematics is finite group theory.
Jane Gray, professor of biology and curator of paleobotany in the
Museum of Natural History, is the new secretary of the College
faculty. She is a graduate of Radcliffe, and received her doctorate
from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been at the
University of Oregon since 1963. Author of more than 40 papers and
reviews, her interests are in paleobotany and palynology (study of
pollens and spores.)
Washington lawyer available for discussion
Ronald Plesser, a Washington, D.C. lawyer associated with the
Center for Study of Responsive Law, is interested in meeting with
students and-or other groups to discuss the federal Freedom of In
formation Act.

BRING sets pickup dates for recyclables
The BRING recycling organization will have a truck at the comer
of 13th and University Streets from 1 to 3 p.m. one Sunday a month.
This truck will pick up recyclable materials-aluminum, glass and tin,
but no paper. The material should be boxed in cardboard or brown
paper bags. Metals should be flattened, glass should be rinsed, but
labels may be left on.
The truck will be available Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2. Nothing
should be left at the site at any other time. The University’s Physical
Plant will pick up all other materials and will not recycle them.
Material should be left only during the announced hours.
