IFC scrimps,
saves, adjusts
The Asian-American Student
Union, the Migrant Labor Project
and Incidental Fee Committee
members requesting that part of
their salaries be used for the
university’s work-study program
were the main business of
Tuesday’s meeting of the In
cidental Fee Committee (IFC).
The IFC passed a request from
Gary Kim, president of the Asian
American Student Union, to
release $156.98 from the AASU’s
travel reserve for an Asian
American conference in San Jose
July 6. The IFC passed his
request on the condition that Kim
make a report about the con
ference through the Emerald.
Migrant Labor Project
President Theresa Moreno
proposed a revision of the
project’s 1973-74 budget. At the
present, $1260 is allocated for the
project’s director, and $480 for its
secretary. No salaries have been
provided for either the project’s
assistant director or consultant.
Moreno asked for a
redistribution of salary funds so
that the director, the assistant
director, the consultant and the
secretary each receive $360. IFC
chairman Randy Shilts praised
the proposal and noted that the
project’s revised budget will save
ASUO $300. The Migrant Labor
Project works closely with the
migrant community to educate
the university about migrant
labor problems and programs.
Moreno explained the duties of
the staff members in a report IFC
chairman Randy Shilts. The
program director has the
responsibility of administrating
and directing the Migrant Labor
Project and its community
oriented programs. The assistant
director handles projects that
will “bridge the gap between the
student body and the project’s
community programs.” He is in
charge of advising and providing
discussion when it concerns the
University and ASUO programs
that the project can work with.
The assistant director is also
responsible for the Migrant
Conference in Oregon that will be
held on campus fall term. The
consultant co-ordinates referral
systems and information that can
be utilized by the director for
community projects and the
upcoming conference.

QIC publicity has stressed the
value of its program to the state’s
economy (though it aids in
ventors from the entire Pacific
Northwest). As Shaffer picked up
the safety chains and headed
back to his cramped quarters, he
focused on the value of the
program to the student and
society.
“We’re trying to produce a
technology that has a value,”
Shaffer urged. “We’re trying to
produce young people that have
more interest, more concern in
technology.”
It’s also a lesson for the
student: “He or she says ‘it’s
mine’...once they’re inspired it
gives the student drive...They get
slapped around and knocked
around...The bank won’t give
them the backing. The
manufacturer says ‘the hell if
we’re gonna produce that.’ ”
