Add engineers to the list of shortages.
And put them near the top, says the dean of
engineering at Oregon State University,
(OSU) because the shortages won’t be easily
or quickly solved. Engineers will play im
portant roles too, he noted, in overcoming
some of the other shortage problems such as
lack of power.
Dean Fred Burgess points out that the
engineer shortage “is becoming evident
already and will be serious by 1976.” 'Hie
reasons: declining engineering enrollments
and increasing national needs.
“Hie manpower shortage can be predicted
simply by counting numbers,” Burgess
states.
In 1970. there were about 260,000 students
enrolled in U.S. engineering schools. That
number has now dropped to just over 200,000.
In 1972, there were 44,150 bachelor of
science degrees awarded in engineering. By
1976. the number will drop to just under
30,000—a figure that can be forecast with
accuracy since all of these students are now
in school.
“National manpower projections suggest
that the nation’s industries and governmental
agencies will need 48,000 new engineering
graduates in 1976. Put that figure alongside
the 30,000 to be graduated and you get more
than 1^ jobs for every graduate,” he con
tinued.
“The 1976 engineering graduates will find
excellent job opportunities but 1976 em
ployers will find slim pickings,” the OSU
engineering leader notes.
