Meryl Barker qualifies unnoticed
for national AAU next month
Running quietly and almost
unnoticed in the fading light at
Hayward Field Tuesday night
was Meryl Barker, winner of the
women’s mile.
She broke the five-minute
barrier of the women’s mile run
with a 4:58.7 and qualified for the
national AAU meet three weeks
away in June.
Barker’s t i me rates high on the
list of the country’s national
competition
“When you get under five
minutes, you’re getting into a
pretty elite group,” said Ron
Brinkert, Meryl’s coach during
the regular season at Oregon.
“You’re talking about the top
twenty in the country. I guess it
would be comparable to the four
minute barrier for men.”
Barker is quite satisfied with
her performance, especially
after missing considerable
training during the off-season
because of a hip injury. “You
really need that off-season
training for strength. I didn’t get
it because of a bad hip.’’
Now tha t she is past the one
barrier, she's looking forward to
the AAU’s. “I’ll just be trying to
make the finals there,” she said.
‘That’s really all I can hope for
after missing the training.”
She’s already aiming at next
year. Cross-country competition
in the fall will help her regain her
strength and work with her
personal coach Clayton Steinke
will help.
Softballers fall twice
Errors and inconsistent pit

A softball team last weekend.
The women’s A team lost games
to both Oregon College of
Education and Oregon State in
the Oregon Collegiate Sports day
Saturday.
The A team won, however, a
game against the Burton’s, a
Corvallis city league team.
The Oregon B team lost both of
its games to OCE and OSU.
The squads from OCE finished
the day with a perfect no-loss
record.
The Sportsday ended regular
play for both women’s teams.
Thursday the combined teams
will play a team composed of
graduate students and faculty of
the women’s P.E. department.
The top hitter for the season for
Oregon’s A team was pitcher
Carolyn Pura. She had a .464
batting average. Shortstop Peggy
McCormick followed with .416.
The B teams' top hitters, left
fielder Dorris Vance and catcher
Jackie Lehman, did not par
ticipate in Saturday’s Sportsday.
Vance had a .470 average; Leh
man batted .421.
Scores for Saturday’s games
were: Oregon A lost to OCE A
team 10-1, Oregon A lost to OSU A
7-6 (extra inning necessary) and
Oregon A defeated Burton's 16-6.
Oregon B lost to OSU B 10-7 and
Oregon B lost to OCE B 16-15
(extra inning necessary).
