Swimming concludes IM year

The 1972-73 Intramural competition has come to
a close with the High Hill Gang, champs in softball;
Sigma Chi, the golf winners; the “No Names,”
tennis champs and the Turkey Trotters, the
swimming medalists.
It was the High Hill Gang 8-7 over Watson III in
the softball finals. The High Hill Gang survived the
quarterfinals, squeaking out a 6-5 win over the
Legal Eagles. The champions clobbered the Quimps
13-3 in the semifinals.
In IM Golf, Sigma Chi took the title, winning
convincingly over Ganoe.
In the IM Tennis Finals the awesome doubles
combination of Jay Stokes and Brice Bassett led the
“No Names” to a 3-0 win over Deady’s Dinks. The
team of Stokes, Bassett, Walter Atebara, Todd Hara
and Wayne Reingold never lost a single set in five
matches.
Deady Hall’s mathematicians, known as
Deady’s Dinks, ran out of gas early chasing the
hard backcourt shots of the “No Names.”
“No match was ever in doubt, we were too
powerful,” said an elated Jay Stokes. Never in IM
tennis history had a team won every set of every
match contested, until the “No Names” turned the
trick.
The Turkey Trotters won the swimming crown
at Leighton Pool Tuesday with 47 points to Clark
Hall’s 42.
Harry Megaw of the Turkey Trotters swam to a
first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.73
seconds and covered the 50-yard freestyle in 24
seconds to take second place.
Clark Hall’s Carl Nicoletti just missed catching
Megaw in the 100-yard freestyle with a 55.91 second
effort.
Megaw came back to swim the 200 freestyle
relay with teammates Smith, Hiller, Purtzer and
Robinson, leading the Turkey Trotters to a first
place time of 1:42.
Ganoe’s 200-yard medley relay team of Louchs,
Bastien, Miji, Elliott and Van Vetthousen swam to a
winning time of 1:55.
Tom Phipps of Clark Hall was victorious in the
200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04. Sigma Chi’s
Ron Fisher took second in 2:16 with Badas’ Darryle
Pafe third in 2:21.
Clark Hall’s Mike Heady was the 50-yard
freestyle champ in 23 seconds.
ATO’s Pat Sawer won the 100-yard individual
medley in 1:01.24 barely holding off Moore Hall’s
Bob Jessap who clocked 1:01.89
However, Jessap came back to take the 100
yard butterfly in 58 seconds. Heady was second in 59
seconds.
Jim Herman of Chi Psi totaled 225.10 points to
win the 1-meter diving crown. ATO’s Stan Shur
vingto was second with 210.15 points.
The 100-yard backstroke matched Sawer and
Elliott, with Sawer winning by a whisker, 1:04.13 to
1:04.17.
Eric Miji swam to a 100 breaststroke title in
1:09.
Women pick up two softball victories
A pair of end-of-the-season
wins Tuesday leaves the Oregon
women’s softball teams high for
this weekend’s Oregon Collegiate
Sportsday.
Oregon’s A team defeated the
Oregon College of Education
team 6-2 in the home game.
Carolyn Pura pitched a five-hit
game for Oregon.
Coach Becky Sisley said
“excellent defensive play by the
entire team” accounted for the
win.
Oregon had 11 hits in the game,
including two hits each by second
baseman Cathi Portlock, third
baseman Kathy Van Bergen and
center fielder Joan Spratlen.
Pura and Van Bergen, as well
as teammates Rachel Dayton
and Pia Leonard, were also top
hitters in the previous week’s
games.
Oregon’s B team downed its
OCE opponent 10-5 Tuesday.
Pitcher Pam Polen limited OCE
to five hits.
A month ago, a game at
Monmouth, the OCE B team had
run over Oregon 22-12.
In tact, both' Oregon teams lost
their first three games of the
season — all away from home
encounters. But the teams
bounced back last week with a
pair of wins over Oregon State.
Coach Sisley credited the sudden
improvement to a two-week rest
from intercollegiate games, and
a chance to work on specific
skills.
In a six-game schedule, Oregon
lost two games to Portland State
University. And Sisley expressed
disappointment that Oregon
won’t have a third try at PSU in
Saturday’s Sportsday. A and B
teams from OSU, OCE and
Oregon will compete in the all
day tournament at Corvallis.
Also playing will be two city
league teams from Corvallis.
