Architecture students win grants
Two University students are among only 20 in the nation to receive
Graduate Thesis Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment for
the Arts this year.
Dennis Maxwell, a student in landscape architecture, and Scott
Wylie, an architecture student, won the 1973 awards.
Maxwell will use his fellowship to study relationships between
land use and transportation and Wylie will focus on “Design Processes
for the Bob’s Superette Neighborhood - A Humanistic Approach”
< Bob’s Superette is a small grocery store near campus).
The awards are traditionally for $750 or $1,000.
English student named Ernst Fellow
Susan Marie Hubbuch, doctoral student in English at the
University, has been awarded the 1973 Rudolf Ernst Graduate
Fellowship in English.
The award is given to aid a promising doctoral candidate in
financing the completion of the doctoral dissertation. Miss Hubbuch,
who lives in Eugene, is now writing her dissertation in the field of
Renaissance drama under the direction of Dr. Thelma Greenfield,
associate professor of English.
The award is given by Alice Henson Ernst, associate professor
emeritus of English, in memory of her late husband, Rudolf Ernst, a
member of the University’s English Department from 1923 to 1951.
Grad presents Japanese books
A 1916 graduate of the University, Jokichi Tominaga of Tokyo, has
given the University two copies of his recently published
autobiography, Le Petit Trianon.
The book is in Japanese, but arrangements have been made by
Kenneth Ghent, foreign student advisin', to have a Japanese student
translate the volume of reminiscences into English. It will become a
part of the University’s Library collection.
Tominaga received the Bachelor of Science degree in architecture
from the University.
Nominations sought for Ersted Award
The University is seeking nominations from students, faculty, and
alumni for the 1973 Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching by a
University faculty member.
The Ersted Award, given annually at the University’s June
Commencement, is in the amount of $1,000.
Nominations for the award should be made in writing and should
indicate reasons for the nomination, and carry the signature of the
nominator Nominations should be sent, before April 13, to Marshall
Wattles, Academic Vice Provost, 103 Johnson Hall.
Two exhibits now at Honors College
Two exhibits are now on display in the Honors College Lounge in
the basement of Friendly Hall. The displays, a small exhibit of six
drawings and lithographs by Mary Gregg Byrne titled “Friends” and
an exhibit of black and white photographs by David Cockcroft, are
open to the public.

OSEA committee elections set
The election for the OSEA unit selection committee will be held in
the next several months. According to OSEA by-laws any full-time
employee whose dues are paid and who is a member of the bargaining
unit being represented is eligible to run. Further information on the
exact dates and positions will be posted on bulletin boards.
WICHE offers summer projects
At least 35 paid summer research opportunities available to
Oregon students and students to be have been developed by the
WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education)
Resources Development Internship Program The internships, which
involved students in work as researchers and project leaders in
Oregon governmental and private agencies and result in the
publication of students’ findings by WICHE, are available in several
such fields.
The WICHE program will accept applications from upper class
and graduate students until April 15, and the tax free educational
stipend for 12 weeks’ work ranges from $900 to $1,140, depending on
marital status and year in school. A complete list of available projects
