Honeyman many people walk the
three-quarters of a mile to enjoy
the privacy of the long expanse of
beach.
The Dunes National Recreation
Area was enacted in March of ‘72
by the United States Congress,
according to Jim Lyne, assistant
recreation staff officer for the
Siuslaw National Forest. It “has
some of the largest dunes on the
Pacific Coast and there are fresh i
water lakes,” Lyne said.
The Recreation Area stretches
along almost 50 miles of beach
from the mouth of the Siuslaw
River almost all the way to Coos
Bay, according to Lyne. A
Recreation Area is something
that the Congress believes to be
'of national significance, ac
cording to Lyne.
The Oregon coast is not noted
for swimming as is the coast in
Southern California. The water is
cold and you either have to have a
wet suit, be oblivious to the cold
or be numb in order to do much
swimming. There are, however,
beautiful lengths of beach to walk
along and lots of driftwood to
search through. There are
lengths of cliffs, such as those
near the Sea Lion Caves above
Florence, that drop down to the
ocean and are just for sight
seers.
Some people try surfing on the
coast, but this is difficult,
because of the rocky nature of the
coast line, the undertow and the
small waves.
There are some other in
teresting things to do on the
coast. There is the 64-mile Jet
Boat ride on the Rogue River
leaving from Gold Beach. Some
of the hydro-jet boats carry mail
up the Rogue as boats have been
doing since 1895 and pass through
some river scenery which is not
accessible by car.
For those who like observing
sea animals there are the Un
dersea Gardens and the Depoe
Bay Aquarium, which offer a
view of different kinds of animals
in natural habitats.
There are the Oregon State
University Marine Science
Center at Newport and the
University Marine Center at
Charleston for those who wish to
do some heavy marine animal
and plant life studying.
There are the Sea Lion Caves,
which are open all year and offer
a view into a 1500 foot cavern
home of Steller Sea Lions.
Bandon, Coos Bay, Reedsport
and Tillamook are noted for their
cheese factories and offer tours
through the factories and sam
ples of the various cheeses made.
The Oregon coast also offers a
variety of lodgings, from a quiet,
private piece of beach, you hike
into, to the state parks and the
various luxury inns and lodges,
such as Salishan at Gleneden
Beach, the Inn at Otter Crest at
Otter Rock and the Inn at Spanish
Head in Lincoln City.
A trip to the coast takes about
an hour and fifteen minutes from
Eugene to Florence and can be
whatever the individual wants it
to be. It can be an expensive tour
down the coast or a quiet,
relaxing self-analyzing time.
It is up to the individual to find
what he likes and nearly
everything offered on any other
stretch of coast is offered here—
along with the unique things
found only on the Oregon Coast.
