ERB MEMORIAL UNION
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU), from
its basement bowling alley to third floor
ASUO offices, is the focal point for a wide
variety of activities and services for
students. The bulk of student funds received
by the EMU annually are used for house
administration—staff salaries, food service
in the cafeteria and soda bar, and main
tenance for the building and its meeting
rooms, lounge, ballroom, and offices.
"House administration" also includes
personnel and supplies for the EMU Print
Shop, which offers inexpensive printing and
copying services to the University Com
munity; the EMU Poster and Sign Shops,
which greatly facilitate campus publicity
efforts at low cost; and the Main Desk,
which gives information, sells ads for the
Oregon Daily Emerald, cashes student
checks, sells theater, concert and bus
tickets and maintains a small student store
among other services.
INCIDENTAL FEE
Students pay incidental fees at the
beginning of each term during registration.
Incidental fee payments, amounting to
about $19 per student per term, are part of
the total incidental fee budget which is
allocated by the ASUOand approved by the
State Board of Higher Education. The
student incidental fee is used to provide "for
cultural and physical development of the
students at the University of Oregon."
This years incidental fee budget
amounts to $837,209.65. A good part of that
money goes to the Erb Memorial Union and
the Athletic Department. The remainder of
the budget is taken up in a bulk subscription
to the Oregon Daily Emerald and funding
for the ASUO government and programs.
The incidental fee is administered by
♦he ASUO. Those students who have
registered and thus paid the incidental fee
are automatically members of the ASUO
and are properly expected to be involved in
the decisions affecting the development of
the ASUO programs and their level of
funding Two ways to influence how the
incidental fee will be allocated are 1) by
attending Senate Fiscal Committee and
Senate budget hearings, and, 2) by voting
for candidates to the Senate who will
represent your views.

ATHLETIC
DEPARTMENT
The ASUO provides partial support ot
the UO Athletic Department through an
incidental fee allocation amounting to
$135,000 per year.
Prior to 1971, the Athletic Department
received a much larger allocation of the
incidental fee. Under an agreement made
between the ASUO and the Athletic
Department, however, incidental fee
support was cut to the present level, with
the balance of support to be made up in
ticket sales to athletic events. The new
policy proved successful during the pilot
year, 1971-72.
