Resources open
to non-students
The Division of Continuing Education through its centers
and regional offices advises a program of credit and non
credit courses for the several institutions of the Oregon State
System of Higher Education.
“The continuing education program is primarily an
extension of University resources to persons not regularly
enrolled as students on campus.” *
Continuing education programs are designed to satisfy
many interests such as helping people to learn to do their jobs
well, and making sure of leisure time.
The Division of Continuing Education does not grant a
degree of its own but degrees are granted through the
member colleges and universities. Many of the courses of
fered through the Division of Continuing Education carry
graduate or undergraduate credits.
The Division of Continuing Education offers evening
classes and independent study programs.
University students who have paid full time student
tuition are not required to pay additional fees for evening
credit classes offered by the Division of Continuing
Education, except as required for overtime hours and certain
stipulated courses.
Independent study is an external (off campus) in
struction “through correspondence, televised, mixed media,
and programmed instruction courses.” These courses are
available to all interested persons, both students who seek to
complete requirements for graduation or to explore new
areas and people in the Oregon community at large.
About 176 courses from the colleges and universities of
the Oregon State System of Higher Education and about 27
universal high school credit courses are listed in the
catalogue.
Fees charged for independent study courses are
generally lower than fees charged for campus classes at
Oregon State System of Higher Education institutions.
The fee for a three quarter-hour class is $51. Each high
school course fee is $38 per half-unit, the equivalent of one
semester's work in a given subject. Graduate credit is $25 per
credit hour.
“Independent study students may earn credits through
the college level examination program (CLEP) developed by
the .College Examination Board. CLEP general
examinations, for those who have completed less than 90
quarter hours of credit, are available in social science,
history, natural science and the humanities. CLEP subject
examinations, open to all undergraduates, are available in
American history, American literature, biology, algebra,
trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, geology, introductory
business law, economics, money and banking and
sociology "
Independent study syllabuses on most of these courses
may be purchased at the Co-op bookstore and used to study
for CLEP exams.
Each independent study student may begin his course at
any time and proceed as rapidly as he wants. The time limit
for each course is 12 months. However there can be renewal
for another six months The renewal fee is $2.
