White Bird Clinic offers
professional medical and
psychological help for many in
the community. Located at 341 E.
12th St., the clinic has one half
time physician and several
volunteer physicians working
evenings.
The clinic is principally
designed to handle drug cases,
but they also give help to people
who need medical care and
cannot afford it. Their services
are free, although donations are
needed and appreciated.
Appointments for medical help
are made in person at the clinic.
Walk-in counseling, without
appointment. and ongoing
counseling are services provided
by the psychological department.
A squad of personnel is on hand
every minute of the day to handle
emergency calls or go to a crisis
situation.
k A recent addition to Whitebird
"s the Education Annex, located
at 323 E. 12th St. The Education
Annex has a separate staff and
provides information about
drugs, has a resource center with
materials available for the
public, initiates drug education
programs in the schools, and
trains people to deal with drug
problems.
An organization that acts as a
sort of second Chamber of
Commerce for Eugene, is Switch
board. It is a referral service for
Eugene’s counter-culture, as well
as providing its own direct ser
vices. Switchboard's number,
686-8453, is a number that is
useful for many people to know.
In the line of direct services,
Switchboard provides a series of
bulletin boards for rides, jobs,
housing, and sales. It also
serves as a counseling and drop
in center.
The majority of time is spent
acting as a referral agency for
both “straight” and “alter
native” services in the area
People are referred to agencies
such as Whitebird. Legal Aid,
Welfare programs and
cooperatives
Switchboard runs on 30
volunteers and a budget supplied
completely by the coordinates
and donations. The ASUO
provides 535 a month to cover the
costs of the two business phones.
One of Switchboard's unique
services is a crash referral:
people in need of a place to stay
should call Switchboard and they
will in turn be referred to places
like communes, homes, Youth
Hostel and Family Shelter House.
Eugene’s Youth Hostel is the
only one of its kind in Oregon. The
program just began this summer
and is located inside a large
house at 416 Jefferson.
For a fee of $1 a traveller can
get a bed, bath, and check his
pack for the night. Breakfast and
dinner are served for a quarter
each.
Like all other community
services the Youth Hostel is not
overendowed with funds.
Donations are always ap
predated.
Shelter House is located at 2308
Willamette Street. It is a place
where low’ income families are
put up and fed until permanent
quarters can be found for them.
Eugene Emergency Housing
Corporation, a non-profit
organization, sponsors Shelter
House. In the future student
volunteers will be sought to ex
pand the effectiveness of the
program.
These are just a few of the
services available in Eugene. If
you haven’t seen one that fits
your need in this article that
doesn't mean that it doesn’t exist.
One thing you can bet on—a quick
call to an outfit that is listed here
will probably give you the an
swer.
