All ages served
by local YMCA
"This YMCA is a family YMCA,” said Sue Bowser,
creative class coordinator for the YMCA, “we have activities
for from six months up.”
Although, the initials, YMCA stand for Young Men’s
Christian Association, Bowser emphasized that Lane County
has a family oriented YMCA rather than one specializing in
serving young men.
There are campus branches of the YMCA and the YWCA
(Young Womens Christian Association) which are separate
branches of the national organization, but which cooperate
with the Lane County YMCA chapter, bowser said.
According to Lane YMCA literature, this county branch
hopes to “provide for the physical, emotional, intellectual
and spiritual development of the individual, the group, the
family and the community with programs designed to meet
the expressed needs of the people within the community; and
programs supplemental to existing community programs;
programs of an experimental nature to meet potential
community problems.”
“As far as programs, we want to have an emphasis on
families, with pre-school and grade school programs as our
best.” Bowser said. Kindergym and Swim are offered for
ages two years to five, and a special mother and child swim
c ourse for mothers with children between six months and two
years of age is offered.
A membership in the YMCA covers use of its facilities
and participation in most of the special activities and classes
which the YMCA sponsors.
Membership fees vary with age and may be paid either
| in a lump sum or in installments. A family membership costs
$115 if the parents are 30-years old and under, $161 if the
parents are 31-years of age or older and $210 for a Business
Men’s Division family membership, which covers use of
special facilities and a few other added benefits.
The youth annual membership fee is $28. with the men’s
membership fee set at $40 for men between the ages of 19 and
24, $51 for men between the ages of 25 and 30 and $80 for ages
31 and over. The women’s membership fee is $40 for ages 19
to 24. $51 for ages 25 to 30 and $69 for ages 31 and over. If the
membership fee is paid on the installment plan the annual fee
is about $5 more.
