WHITEBIRD DRUG INFORMATION CENTER
The drug Information Center, initiated in the spring of 1972, provides an
swers to any and all questions concerning drugs and drug usage This includes,
but is not restricted to the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects
of drug usage whether it be prescription, over-the-counter, or illegal street
drugs In its two terms of existence, this agency assisted individuals and groups
from the University and the general community with over 120 major research
projects and answered over 600 telephone calls requesting information about
drugs and related topics The Center is affiliated with Eugene's White Bird
Socio Medical Clinic and has two University professors working with it as drug
consultants . , .. . , . .
The DIC’s library houses over 200 books (most of which can be checked out
bv individuals needing drug-related information!, numerous medical articles,
drug pamphlets, research data and other information organized into categories
concerning the different drugs, and bibliographies prepared by the Center of all
books in the Main and Science Libraries at the University and % Eugene
bookstores which pertain to drugs In addition, the DIC has access to all books
in Sacred Heart General Hospital’s Medical and Doctor’s Library, and is tied
into the MEDLARS computer system, a world-wide data bank that collects all
medical and medical research information.
The Drug Information Center has initiated a Drug Analysis Project that
took effect on July 27,1972. It is a free, anonymous service to the people of Lane
County whereby an individual may have an illegal street drug analyzed and
obtain the results of this testing either through the Drug Information Center or
local news media channels.
Finally, starting in Fall term, 1972, the DIC is presenting a University
accredited course (Health 4091 on the Psychoactive Drugs. The class is being
offered every Thursday night, from 7:30p.m. to9:30p.m. in 138 Commonwealth
Building Individuals attending this class will be treated to some of the most
knowledgeable and renowned experts in the Pscyhoactive Drug field. The class
is open to all interested individuals from the community as well as students and
faculty at the University. The class and guest speakers are being publicized
through community media channels so that all who are interested may attend.
The Drug Information Center has a staff of 20, and is open from 9 to 9 Monday
through Friday, and 12 to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A good number of
books and files may be checked out by individuals, either from the University or
community and we are located in rm. 12, in the basement of the Erb Memorial
Student Union on the University of Oregon Campus. Our phone is:
