Written and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. Although
done for Hollywood, this film may be the equal of
Pontecorvo's Battle of Algiers in its portrayal of
revolutionary agony and passion. The story of a
colonial uprising in the 18th century. Brando stars as
a British agent sent to destroy the Portugese sugar
trade and to crush the Black struggle for in
dependence. Because of its star, its director and its
extremely effective message this film has been
suppressed by Hollywood. After a very short com
mercial release without publicity in 1970 it has vir
tually been withdrawn from distribution.
