Unknown Carrington captures
top long jump qualification
Ralph Boston decided not to jump, seven 26-toot
junipers failed to qualify and unknown Preston
Carrington leaped 26' V«” to headline long jump
qualifying competition at the 1972 Olympic Trials,
Friday.
Boston, at 33 years old, decided not to try for his
fourth straight Olympic team berth. An injury to
his knee and calf didn’t respond during his warm
ups and dictated Boston's decision
I was hoping to make one good jump today,
then one or two tomorrow But I wasn't getting one
third the speed I was accustomed to coming down
the runway with and I just couldn't see tearing it
up," Boston said.
Boston will make the trip to Munich as a TV
commentator, but he was obviously disappointed.
When asked, he said, "Yes and no. Yes because I
honestly thought I could make the team. No,
because I've been there three times.”
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Preston Carrington
jumped out of obscurity in Wichita, Kansas into the
sandtrap of Hayward Field and found himself the
top qualifier for today’s prelims and finals.
Carrington, who works with the NCAA kids’ track
program in Wichita, needed only one jump.
Henry Hines, jumper of 27by feet with wind aid,
took the second spot at 26-ty. and Amie Robinson
grabbed the third qualifying place with a 25-11 leap.
Bouncey Moore took two jumps. The first was a
scratch The second measured only 23-9 C, and he
ended up 18th, far from the final qualifying spot of
twelfth
Moore injured his back on May 6 against
Oregon State. The injury came on his 26 1
season's best jump Since then he has competed
only twice, making the finals in the NCAA but not
competing because of the reaggravated injury, and
then Friday.
Many other notables failed to make the final
competition set for today at 7 p.m. In fact, seven 26
foot jumpers failed to qualify for the finals.
I’hil Shinnick came into the competition with
the fourth best leapof the season, but jumped 24-7by,
finished 14th, and failed to make it. He had a best of
26-5', coming into the meet.
Jerry Proctor fouled on both of his first two
jumps, and managed only 22-8 and finished last in
the competition. He came into the meet with a 26
3' ■ season's best, fifth best among the long jump
entrants
National high school record holder Ken Duncan
jumped 24-9' „ and finished just out of the money in
13th place His 26-2'4 stands as the nations best
prep mark. Duncan jumped a series of 23-5',4, 24
9':\ and 23-6ly.
Jeff Bolin, a 26-2'< jumper from Purdue,
managed only 24-^ to finish in 16th.
NCAA runner-up A1 Lanier, Cincinnati, landed
in 15th place with a jump of 24-6 :‘j. Along with
Moore, Stan Royster a 26-'4 jumper dropped
competition after receiving an injury.
Another non-qualifier was Ron Humphrey, who
hud just missed 26 feet earlier this season at 25-11
n i He could jump only 23-9 3n for 17th place on the
list.
Qualifying behind the three top men was Stan
Whitley, Cal International Track Club, in fourth
with a 25-10' i he achieved on his final try.
In fifth was Air Force's Gary Rainwater at 25
9' i; sixth, freshman NCAA champ from USC and
the S.C. Striders' Kandy Williams; and seventh. Bill
Rea, third placer in NCAA, who flew 25-7 on his first
jump
In eighth landed Army’s Ron Coleman, 4th in
the AAIJ who jumped 25-6. Coleman has a personal
best of 27-" i.
At ninth is Norm Tate, New York Pioneer Club,
at 25-5'i Tenth was Henry Jackson, Army, at 25

3*2, and qualifying Uth on his final jump was
Oregon Track Club's Tom Smith. The former
Oregon jumper leaped 25-2 for the placing.
Qualifying last was James McAlister, UCLA,
who has a personal best of 26-6*2, but went 24-10*2
too qualify last into the finals today.
None of the qualifying jumps carry into the
finals, but Hines and Robinson appear to be ready
for their chase after Munich tickets. The third spot
is wide open No one can be ruled out of a chance to
make the team The field, despite losing seven 26
footers, is still that tough.
For Carrington, his 26-*2 was his lifetime best.
He'll need to better it again most likely to be close to
an Olympic berth
Boston said, "I don’t see any shoo-ins. They’re
going to have to work for it.”
One thing is certain: the competition for the
three spots on the U.S. Olympic team should be
bitterly contested And if the long jumpers get
turned on like the triple jumpers did last weekend,
then Ralph Boston’s second best jump ever and
former world record jump of 27-4^4 may be
threatened.
