Canada Day picnic scheduled
A day University Canadian students call their
own, the annual Canada Day Picnic, will be held
Thursday at Armitage Park from 3:30 to 9p.m.
The picnic features games, races and activities
such as the “National Softball Championships.”
The game “pits representatives of the provinces
against each other for the Great Canada ‘Goose’
Trophy,” according to Lawrence Radcliff who is a
spokesman for the event.
There will also be activities for the kids, and free
ice cream and pop will be provided.
The picnic will be the fourth to be held at the
University. Each of the celebrations was arranged
by Canadian members of a School Activities class
taught by Guy Sheelenbarger of the College of
Education.
The picnic is open to all. Admission is 50 cents for
adults and free for kids. Cooking facilities are
available at the park, but those attending must
furnish their own food and drink.

Olympic banners to be exhibited
Twenty-six nylon banners representing the major Olympic events
will be on exhibit at the University’s Museum of Art beginning
Thursday at 8:00 p.m., when a special opening will be held in con
junction with the opening day of the Olympic trials.
The banners, designed by Canadian artists for the Olympic
Pavilion of Montreal Expo ‘67, symbolize such sports as rowing, judo
sailing, basketball, swimming and diving, figure skating, ice hockey,
wrestling, skiing, and others. The track and field banner will be
featured in honor of the sports events being held at the Olympic trials
in Eugene.
The designs for the banners were taken fromactual photographs of
Olympic athletes in action. The completed set of banners are each
three by six feet.
The banners were donated to the Museum of Art by Thomas
Gunkelman, Fargo, North Dakota who owns the only complete set of
the Olympic banners.
Free recital set for Wednesday
Dorothy Bergquist, soprano, will give a recital at 8 p.m. Wed
nesday at the University Music School Recital Hall.
Bergquist graduated from the Manes College of Music in New
York City. Her husband, Peter Bergquist, is a member of the Music
School faculty at the University.
Accompanying Bergquist on the piano will be Robert Edwards,
Eugene, who recently received his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the
University.
Bergquist will sing selections from Felix Mendelssohn, Anton
Webern, Alban Berg, and Hugo Wolf.
The public is invited to the recital free ofcharge.
Aid for scientific research given
Carolyn M. Cross, a University student, has been given a grant to
aid scientific research by the Society of the Sigma Xi, according to the
chairman of the society’s Grants-In-Aid Research Committee, Harold
Cassidy.
Cross’ study is entitled “Environmental,habitat, andbiotic factors
affecting the growth and reproduction of Cystoseira osmundacea, an
algae.”
“Sigma Xi each year makes a number of grants to promising
scientists at critical points in their research careers,” stated Cassidy
in making the announcement.
He continued, “We recognize that many needs are relatively too
small for the large foundations to consider, yet to the scientist himself
the need may be critical. It is to meet these needs that our research
fund is maintained.”
Ramsey Lewis to play concert
A special concert, “Trackin’ & Truckin’ Sounds of 72,” will be
presented at the University Monday.
The event will star The Jerry Butler Revue, featuring Brenda Lee
Eager, Peaches, and the Ice-Man Band.
Special guest star will be Ramsey Lewis and the Ramsey Lewis
Trio.
Trackin’ & Truckin’ Sounds of ’72 will be at 8:45 p.m. in McArthur
Court. Tickets are now on sale at the main desk of the Erb Memorial
Union and Crystal Ship. Prices for advance sales are $3 for general
admission and $4 for reserved seats. Tickets sold at the door will be $4
for general admission and $5 for reserved seats.
Proceeds from the concert go into the special fund maintained by
the MANA Foundation, Inc., non-profit education organization at the
University to assist economically disadvantaged students; to provide
for extra-curricular activities that enhance the educational ex
perience for these students; to provide academic achievement grants;
and to establish a contingency fund for emergencies, such as travel
due to family sickness or death.
Letters of the name MANA represent Mexican-Americans, Afro
Americans, Native Americans, and American Whites.

Chavez support mass planned
A special mass to show support for farm worker organizer Cesar
C havez will be held at 7:30 p.m Thursday at the Newman Center, 1850
Emerald in Eugene. Coffee and cookies will be served after the mass.
Committee to hold reorganization meeting
The Reorganization meeting of the Lane County Democratic
c entral t ommittee will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Harris Hall in
Eugene
Several officers including the chairman, congressional com
mitteeman and woman. 18-20 year old voter representatives and seven
delegates to the Democratic Party postprimary State Convention will
be elected at the meeting.
Nominees for county positions need not be members of the Central
*■ ommittee. however, nominations for these offices can be made onlv
by members of the Central Committee
Legislative district caucuses will be held following the election of
officers, to provideanopportunity for Central Committee members to
become acquainted with the committeemen and women in their
respective districts.
