Reforestation bill passed by House
Forth District Congressman John Dellenback (R-Ore ) expressed
his pleasure after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly
approved the Accelerated Reforestation of National Forests Act last
week, 371-5. Dellenback is a co-sponsor and a strong supporter of the
bill originally introduced by Congressman John Kyi (R-Iowa).
Dellenback said, “I am particularly pleased because this measure
would speed up the reforestation of our national forest lands in all
parts of the nation, some parts of which need it even more criticially
than do we.”
The legislation would establish a special fund for the reforestation
of national forests and require the Agriculture Department to transfer
certain other earmarked funds to the reforestation account.
Asian studies correction
The results of a referendum polling student opinion on HPUP’s
original Asian Studies recommendation were misprinted in Friday’s
Emerald. The results should read: Uphold HPUP’s decision, 361;
Retain Asian Studies as a master’s degree program, 1670.
The referendum was part of the ASUO General Election ballot.
Philosopher to speak on Existentialism
Philosopher Walter Kaufman, well-known author, educator and
translator, will speak on “What is wrong with Existentialism” tonight
at 7 p m in the EMU Dad’s Room.
Kaufman, who has taught philosophy at Princeton University
since 1947, is author of such books as “Nietzsche,” “The Faith of a
Heretic," “Cain and Other Poems,” and “Tragedy and Philosophy.”
Men’s Liberation group to meet
Two male University students are forming a “group for men” on
campus with the purpose of “combatting sexism.”
Chuck Campbell, junior, and Rick Rosenfeld, senior, said Sunday
the group will have its first meeting at 7:30p.m. today in the EMU.
One purpose of the group will be to “support the feminist
movement on campus,” Rosenfeld said “We’ll be discussing our own
sexism and some recent political activities,” he said
Exact purposes of the group will be discussed at tonight’s
meeting, Campbell said
Weaver to speak on campus
Jim Weaver will be on campus today. He will speak on two oc
casions and will meet with students for several hours at the EMU.
Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity will sponsor his appearance at
It 30 am in room 129 of the Law School.
At 12:30 p m Weaver will speak at the E M U. Free Speech
Platform Students for Weaver will open a Weaver for Congress Booth
at the Terrace at that time Weaver will have dinner with students at
the College Inn from 5-6:30 p m Tuesday.
Madrigal comedy presented tonight
The University Collegium Musicum, an ensemble of students
interested in the study and performance of rare and ancient music,
will present, under the direction of Harold Owen, a reading of a
madrigal comedy published in 1608 by Adriano Bancheri entitled
“Festino"
It was an entertainment to be given before supper on "Fat
Thursday," equivalent to Shrove Tuesday. The ensemble will include
chorus, a group of solo voices, and instruments of the period such as
recorder krumhorn. and harpsichord The concert will be held free of
charge on Monday. May 8, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the School
of Music
ESC may be
limited without
secretarial help
The University’s En
vironmental Studies Center
(ESC) has a director and a work
study student but it doesn’t have
a secretary and won’t get one if
the state legislature Emergency
Board’s decision is final.
That board decided just over
two weeks ago that the Univer
sity cannot fill the ESC
secretarial position Contacted
Friday. University President
Robert Clark said that the
decision has not been made on
whether or not to appeal the
Emergency Board’s decision to
the State Board of Higher
Education.
Without the secretary the ESC
would be greatly limited in hours
that it could be open for use.
ESC Director Stan Cook,
associate professor of biology, is
responsible for teaching classes
as well as for heading the center.
He is not paid extra for his
directorship Work-study student
.James Rhuman works in the ESC
only 15 hours a week.
The ESC was formed last fall
following a recommendation
from an interdisciplinary faculty
committee It was given high
priority by the University’s
permanent budget committee as
well as by HPUP for its basic
budget of $10,860.
That budget included the
salary for a secretary. More
important, the money for the ESC
was not an additional request by
the University—but a
reallocation of funds within the
University.
